Southfields SGO Area
With school's closing due to CoVID-19 and a third national lockdown in place, we once again must work together to ensure that the physical activity levels and mental well being of our young people remain a priority. There is also evidence of a widening in the fitness gap between our more active pupils and those more vulnerable students whose levels of physical activity dropped dramatically during the first lockdown.
While, the Wandsworth School Games is unable to provide any face-to-face engagement, we remain committed to supporting our schools, parents and carers provide 60 active minutes a day for every child in line with the Chief Medical Officer's guidance. Therefore, we will continue to use this platform to respond to the needs of our schools; supporting teachers, parents and carers to reduce sedentary behaviour, by providing guidance and access to a variety of activities such as fitness, personal challenges, online contests, problem solving games and those which support physical competence, and mindfulness.
During these uncertain times, we will be focus on providing support on the five key areas below:
1. To maintain school engagement and support schools to continue to prioritise and deliver 60 active minutes for every child thus providing opportunities for young people to improve their physical, emotional and social wellbeing.
2. To ensure physical activity and competition provision supports young people’s wider development including their ability to re-socialise and supports their psychological and physiological fitness.
3. To identify & have ongoing provision targeting young people whose physical activity levels have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 (those particularly from low socio-economic areas, BAME, SEND & Girls)
4. To have a continued focus on secondary school engagement – with a focus on supporting those young people who have just transitioned into Year 7/8.
5. To ensure that the local offer provides opportunities for young people to take on leadership and volunteering roles.
Schools will supported to provide virtual challenges, competitions as well as being signposted to and online resources, continual professional development opportunities, plus physical activities on video's via numerous media platforms.
