    Y5/6 Football Tournament 6th May, 2017

The St Michael’s team included Abby K, Grace, Hiba, Laura, Sophia, Yumna and was supported by Ayla, Hiba’s older sister, and a year 4 player, Carolyn, borrowed from St Aloysius when we were short of players! The team has made immense progress over the year and started in fine form. The opening match was again local rivals St Nicholas who had previously beaten us in every encounter. However, on Saturday the tables were turned, with Yumna guarding the defence from their star striker, Abby was freed to score a great individual goal to bring victory in that opening match. A bit of concentration loss,  playing against their previous team mate Carolyn and a very strong centre forward led to a 2-0 loss in the 2nd match to St Aloysius. Coming back strong, however, St Michaels drew 0-0 with the experienced Oxford High school and then beat a strong Phil and Jim’s team 1-0 to win the group.

Unsurprisingly, the semi-finals of the main competition had some strong teams, including the very experienced and talented Cumnor team that we lost 1-0 against. Grace made some amazing saves from their centre forwards to keep us in the match, but it was too tough to get that important equaliser.

The final match was the 3rd/4th play off against St Barnabas. We started strongly in this match with Yumna bursting through their defence, only to be defied by their goalkeeper. In the end, despite Grace’s excellent performance in goal St Barnabas managed to sneak a winner.

I’m really proud of the girls who worked hard throughout the tournament, showing both the improvement in their skills and a strong team spirit. Laura tackled with determination, running around the pitch non-stop. Hiba stopped multiple attacks coming through the middle of the pitch. Sophia ran around with her unstoppable enthusiasm for football. Yumna showed incredible maturity, playing wherever I asked her with no arguing. Probably the best I’ve seen her play. Abby worked hard, causing lots of problems for the defenders in all teams and not getting pushed off the ball. Grace was incredible and got compliments from all managers watching our semi-final. Carolyn, our guest player fitted in perfectly, tackling everyone who dared come near our goal.
