Cycling Development & Year 5/6 Cycling Competition at Melton Rugby Club

Cycling Development & Year 5/6 Cycling Competition

On Tuesday 30th April 2019, we were kindly invited by Clare and Dean from British Cycling to come to Melton Rugby Club to participate in cycling. We are very grateful to have an opportunity to do this and are lucky that Dean spent all morning trying to open his trailer (because he’d lost his keys) so we could have fun.

First, we were playing fun activities whilst waiting for Dean to arrive. We played a lot of fun games such as: stuck in the mud, sharks and fishes, sheep and wolves and blob. They were all so much fun.

After we had played some games Dean arrived and we all ran up to him to help. After all the bikes were out of his trailer, we got our helmets on and jumped onto a bike that was the right size for us. When we had sorted that out we rode over to the race track. First we raced St Mary’s and after we had raced them we raced Stathern. They were both really good.

Once we had raced them everyone went home and we stayed and raced the year 9’s it was a bit of a challenge racing them because they were really fast and good. It was getting to the time that we had to leave so we walked down to the minibus and went back to school then went home.

All of us had so much fun and we really appreciate all the work that Dean did to make this day possible. Thank you to everyone for putting their time and effort into this. We really enjoyed every single moment of this day.

On Tuesday 7th May 2019 we went back to Melton Rugby Club to participate in a cycling competition. When we arrived, Dean from British Cycling was already sorting out the bikes. Once everyone was there, we went to get the right helmet that fit us. When we got our helmets, we went over to the bikes and warmed up so we weren’t stiff.

Everyone was really excited to start the Italian Pursuit which is where two teams of 6 race around a circle and it was timed. When the race starts, the person at the front does one lap then peels off whilst the rest of the team are led by the second person who does another lap before they peel off and so on. We headed over to the track and raced Stathern A, unfortunately we lost against them but that didn’t matter, our time was 3.46.59.

After everyone had finished, we got ready to do the cross country race. The idea of the race was to race for 1 lap of the field. First of all we had to go through poles for about half a lap, then we had to go through a zig zag track and then we had to get off our bikes and sprint to the other side, then get back on. After we had done that we had to go through another zig zag and drop off our bikes to the collector and then run to the person ready to ride and give them a high five. Our time for this race was 11.22.71.

The results were 1st Old Dalby, 2nd Stathern A, 3rd Bottesford, 4th Ab Kettleby, 5th Stathern B and 6th St Mary’s who were the Spirit of the Games Winners.

We all had so much fun competing in this fun competition. Many thanks to everyone who put this all together. The best about the day was the cross country race. Isla’s best bit was certainly going home because her legs were aching.
