Girls Cricket Competition at Melton Cricket Club

Year 5/6 Girls Cricket

On Friday the year 6, 5 and 4 girls went to a cricket tournament at Melton Mowbray Cricket Grounds.

When we got there the field was split into two: we were on the tournaments side but there was a side for games and abilities.  First we put our bags down and went to pitch one.  The captain went forwards from both teams and we won the toss – we choose to field first.  The other team was Frisby and they were batting first.  Everyone took it in turns to bowl.  Everyone bowled very well and some got a wickets.  Every over we would swap bowlers and every two overs they swapped batters.  Unfortunately Frisby won that match and we shook hands at the end.

Next, we stayed on pitch one and played the next team – Bottesford.  Once again we won the toss and choose to bowl first.  Ab Kettleby fielded and batted very well, although we did get out.  In the end the other team won but we all tried very hard.

The final team was Brownlow.  We won the toss once again but opted to bat first.  We got into pairs and we all batted really well.  We got a few runs and we thought we would win but once again the other team won and we finished the competition in fourth.

Because of their kindness and good sportsmanship (including shaking hands at the end) Frisby won spirit of the games and got a beautiful trophy to congratulate them – even though they did not win.   We sat down and the year 8 and 10 leaders congratulated us and told us the results.  We were in fourth, Frisby came third, Bottesford second and in first place – with a shiny trophy and a smiley picture - was Brownlow.  At the end the year 8 and 10 children had a Q&A so we got to know more about them; how they got into cricket and more facts about them.  Some of them told us how they played for Leicestershire and others told us how much they like cricket or how they like to lead it.

The whole cricket tournament was an extremely fun and an energetic way to learn how to be in a team, grow sportsmanship and play a sport that we may or may not have played before.
