Spring Term Round-Up

Mr Brooks, 4 Apr 2019

Here's a round-up of the spring term's PE and sport activities at Bidston Avenue. It's been a busy term!

Spring Term Round-Up

The spring term picked up where the autumn term ended, with lots of high-quality and enjoyable PE and sport taking place at Bidston Avenue.  As well as all of the PE lessons and after-school clubs that took place each day, we have also taken part in competitions for netball, football, futsal, boccia, an inclusive sport festival, gymnastics, pop lacrosse, seated volleyball and athletics.

Here are some of the term's highlights:

Inclusive Sports Festival-

A number of Y6 children had a chance to represent Bidston Avenue, at a festival where they were able to try out a number of sports that they may not have had the chance to do.  These included boccia, new age kurling and seated volleyball.  All those who took part enjoyed a great afternoon of sport!

Quadkids Indoor Athletics Competition-

After lots of practice learning how to master events from the standing long jump, to the chest push and speed bounce, a group of Y3&4 children took part in a quadkids athletics competition at Bebington High Sports College.  Despite this being the first athletics competition for the children taking part, they achieved some fantastic results, particularly in the running events, and secured first place on the night.

Pop Lacrosse Tournament-

In another first for Bidston Avenue, a team of Y6 children took part in a pop lacrosse (a version of lacrosse but played with a mixed 5-a-side team).  After a short training session, the children soon picked up the skills required to pass and receive the ball.  In fact, the team picked up the necessary skills so well that they won each of their matches, even against teams who play the sport regularly.  Another great afternoon of sport!

Y3/4 Gymnastics Competition-

Two teams of Y3/4 gymnasts took part in two days of competition at Bebington High, after learning two routines and how to vault.  The Bidston Avenue gymnasts had spent their lunchtimes practising and refining their routines, in preparation for the competition.  Well done to all those who took part for performing so well.  A special thank you goes to the Y5 children, who took part in last year’s competition and gave up their time to help this year’s competitors learn their routines.

Y2 Premier League Stars' Tournament-

A team of Y2 children travelled to Liverpool FC's Academy, to take part in football tournament.  Our team were able to wear a brand new football kit provided by 2Simple (Purple Mash), as a result of one of Y5 children winning a competition last year.  On the pitch, the team enjoyed taking on teams from across Merseyside and were wonderful representatives of Bidston Avenue.

Leadership Update-

Our Y3&4 children took part in a recent Quadkids competition, however they weren't the only Bidston Avenue children who were at the competition.  Ten of our Y6 children were on hand as sports leaders,  to help competitors with the correct technique and record results.  Working alongside sports leaders from Bebington High Sports College, our children were supportive, patient and helpful in making sure that the competition ran smoothly.  Staff from other schools also commented on their caring nature and the way they helped the younger competitors.  A great event for Bidston Avenue children! Thank you to Mrs Newman, from Bebington High, for helping to provide extra training for our sports leaders.

We asked some of our leaders for their thoughts after the event:

"I enjoyed helping little children do their best."
"It was brilliant because we got to help younger children enjoy athletics."

Dance Festival-

Y6 have been working with Gemma Corcoran during the spring term (as part of CPD development for staff).  As well as Gemma's incredible expertise helping to boost staff subject knowledge and confidence in teaching dance, she also prepared the children for the Wirral School Games- Dance Festival.  Their entry, 'Dance Through The Decades', has been a hit with the children and staff.  Here is the culmination of many hours of hard work and practice.

Y5&6 Liverpool City Region Athletics Finals

A team Y5/6 athletes from Bidston Avenue represented the school at the Liverpool City Region Sportshall Athletics Finals, competing amongst the top fifteen schools from across the area.  They earned their place at the finals after finishing third out of all the schools in Wirral, so were very looking forward to a day of top-drawer athletics.  They were not disappointed!  Ms Ryan was delighted with the team's individual performances and most achieved personal bests in their events.  As if making it to the finals wasn't enough, achieving your best on the day is what most professional athletes aspire to do.  This was due to the fact that many of those involved having been visiting Bebington High, after school each week and spending their lunchtimes training.  Hard work really does pay off! Congratulations to all those who took part!
