Summer Term Round-Up

Mr Brooks, 31 Jul 2019

Here's a round-up of the summer term's PE and sport activities at Bidston Avenue. It's been another fantastic term of high-quality PE & Sport!

Summer Term Round-Up

The summer term promised to be a term packed with great sporting moments, from taking part in National Schools Sport Week, teams representing Wirral at the Merseyside School Games, every child in KS2 taking part in Co-op Academy Bebington's School Games Week, to our very own sports day.  What's not to love about this time of year?!

As well as our PE lessons and after-school clubs that take place each day, we have also taken part in competitions for netball, football, futsal, sitting volleyball, gymnastics, athletics and an inclusive sport festival, amongst others.

Here are some of the term's highlights:

Y5&6 Girls’ Kwik Cricket

Just before Whit half term, a team of Y5&6 girls travelled to Oxton Cricket Club, to take part in a kwik cricket competition.  For many of the team, this was their first kwik cricket competition but that didn’t seem to concern the team as they won their opening match.  The girls had a great afternoon and enjoyed representing the school.

Y5&6 QuadKids Competition

Three teams of athletes from Bidston Avenue took part in athletics competitions, at The Oval, Bebington. The quadkids competitions saw the Bidston Avenue children compete against children from other Wirral schools, in running, jumping, throwing and running events.  The many lunchtimes and after-school clubs spent practising and improving their technique paid off, as the morning team came first in their group and many of the other children taking part earned personal bests in the events.

Y5&6 ‘Fit Fun Fest’ & Football Competitions

To celebrate the Women’s World Cup, Wirral School Games organised an afternoon of sport at Wirral Tennis Centre.    Made up of two parts, the ‘Fit Fun Fest’ introduced one of the Bidston Avenue teams to sports including ultimate frisbee, volleyball and soccercise.  The other team took part in a football competition.  Our teams were representing England and so had spent time making their own England t-shirts and donned wigs, hats and flags for the closing ceremony, at which some of them performed a dance.  A great afternoon for all those who took part!

Y5&6 High 5 Netball Competition

After being put through their paces each Monday after school, two teams of our Y5&6 children took part in a High 5 netball competition at Liscard Primary.  Both teams enjoyed playing in competitive matches and came second in their respective groups.

Y4 Cricket Masters Day

Oxton Cricket Club recently held a match which saw a number of former England international cricketers, take on Oxton’s XI in a T20 match.  To coincide with the match, a group of Year 4 children visited Oxton Cricket Club and enjoyed being put through their paces by coaches from Cheshire Cricket Board.  They also received some expert words of wisdom and pointers from three former England internationals; Alex Tudor, Adam Hollioake and Craig White.  A fantastic opportunity for all involved!

Liverpool FC's FS2 Competition

In their first competitive representing Bidston Avenue, a team of children from FS2 travelled over to Liverpool FC's Academy, to take part in a great morning of skills development and small-sided football.  An experience they will remember!

Gymnastics Festival

A team of Y4-6 gymnasts took part in gymnastics festival at Wirral Gymnastics Club.  The team had been working hard during the lunchtimes to develop and then rehearse routines which had to be performed at the festival.  The created a routine to perform to a song of their choice (Waka Waka) and performed this in front of gymnasts from several Wirral schools.  Later in the session, the children used the amazing gymnastics equipment at the club, including the bars, tumbling mats and even trampolines, all under the watchful eyes of Wirral Gymnastic Club coaches and gymnasts who attend the club on a regular basis.  The team had a wonderful experience and can't wait to take part again next year.

Y5&6 Cricket Competition

A team of our Y5 & 6 cricketers took on teams from local schools in the amazing surroundings of Birkenhead Park. Some strong batting saw the team win their first match, although our opponents, from Oxton St Saviours, proved to be formidable cricketers, fielding and batting very well.

Y5&6 Girls' Football Tournament

Our Y5&6 girls' footballers have been training hard with Mamudo, from Shaftesbury Youth Club, at this year's after-school club.  They have enjoyed the different competitions they have taken part in and couldn't wait to travel to Liscard Primary to take part in a tournament against local schools.  Well done to the team who made it through the group stages and onto the semi-final.  A great achievement!

Merseyside School Games

Bidston Avenue had a team qualify for the sitting volleyball finals at the Merseyside School Games, after winning a local tournament and were invited to take part in the dodgeball competition too.  Both teams met up with over one thousand other children from across the Merseyside region and took part in a fantastic day of sport.  The level of competition was a step up from the local finals but that didn't put off our sitting volleyball team as a great run through their competition resulted in them returning to school as the Merseyside School Games seated volleyball champions- amazing!  The dodgeball team showed great determination through their fixtures and enjoyed taking part in some great matches.

Y5&6 Futsal League Finals

After playing a number of fixtures since the start of 2019, our two Y5&6 futsal teams went into the final round of matches in second and third place in Ridgeway High School's futsal league.  With some tight results and a Bidston Avenue derby, the league positions were very close and in fact, both teams finished in exactly the same positions they had started the afternoon in.  That said, there was some great football on display and our teams enjoyed taking part in the league's first fixtures.  We're already looking forward to next year!

Co-op Academy Bebington's Primary School Games Week

Y3-6 took part Co-op Academy Bebington's Primary School Games Week earlier in July.  Each year group competed against similar-aged children from local schools at events ranging from quicksticks (hockey), boccia and sitting volleyball to dance, drama and a visit to the school farm.  Children from each year group competed with the passion, determination, courage and excellence.  A number of children from each year group even received 'spirit of the games' medals after being selected by sports leaders for demonstrating such values.

Weatherhead High School Leadership Academy

Year 5 have been very busy recently and took part an event at Weatherhead High School, to help develop their sports leaders.  There was a plethora of activities for the Y5 children to take part in and the weather was perfect too!

Cole's Cup

A team of Y6 footballers recently took part in Prenton Primary's Cole's Cup.  The friendly tournament is held each year in honour of Cole Breadner, a Prenton Primary pupil who very sadly passed way after battling a rare form of cancer, in order to raise funds for Claire House.  On the pitch, the team came up against some tough opposition and so found it difficult to pass the ball around easily and create opportunities like they normally would.  We were knocked out in the group stages but were happy just to have taken part in a competition for such a good cause.

Sports Day

What a fantastic day we had on Monday 15th July!  The format of this year's sports day was slightly different to those previous and involved children taking part in a range of activities at The Oval, Bebington, including the Race for Life.

In the morning, Y3-6 children completed in quadkids athletics, taking part in competitions for throwing, jumping, sprinting and a longer distance run.  Results for all events were recorded and are currently being collated.  Some children opted to take part in inclusive sports such as zumba, seated volleyball and boccia too.

After a morning of fantastic athletics and great weather, Y3-6 were joined by Y1&2 for the Race for Life.  Over 350 children, staff and parents all took to the track to complete as many laps of it as they could, running, jogging or walking, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.  It was an amazing sight!

A quick water break followed and then Y1&2 tried their hand at the long jump and vortex, Y3&4 took part in obstacle races and Year 5 even tried to conquer the high jump.  Of course, we couldn't forget about the parents' races too!  Both the mums' and dads' races were very competitive and run in very quick times!

Hear about the day's events from two of our Y5 pupils, Avneet and Avril, who were given the role of being sports reporters.

Here's what over 350 children, parents and staff taking part in the Race for Life, all at the same time, looks like:

A very busy summer term packed with fantastic sporting opportunities.

The term in numbers-

  • 24 after-school clubs on offer
  • 175+ signups for lunchtime and after-school sports clubs each week
  • 2 teams of Bidston Avenue children represented Wirral at the Merseyside School Games
  • Over 523,000 active minutes- that's how much time children from Y1-6 have been involved in PE/sport activities (ranging from PE lessons and competitions, to the sports day)
