The Best Sports Day Yet!

Avril (Y5), 25 Jul 2019

A team of reporters covered the track and field events on Sports Day, collecting the thoughts and witnessing some of the fantastic sporting moments that took place. Here, one of our Y5 children shares her view of the day.

The Best Sports Day Yet!

Yes, it’s that time again. Year 4 have been split into their groups, ready for the Biddy Ave. mini Olympics. First up was England vs. Brazil.  After quite a quick introduction, they began. Layla and Mathew got off to an amazing start, even though Matthew threw further than Layla, the efforts were high. Leighton beat Anaiya when throwing the vortex, and Corey even threw over 30m! At this moment in time, England seemed to be impossible to beat. Brazil were trying their best and had some pretty good scores such as, a 17m throw. We have some great throwers here; they must have practised a lot. I later spoke to Evie when I asked her why she chose to take part in this sport.  She replied that she 'fancied taking part in something new for a change’. In the end England won the vortex competition and Mrs Gupta was supporting and cheering on her team the whole time.

After England vs. Brazil, we had France vs. Spain. George and Olly had some spectacular throws, some of the best out of their country. Next up was China vs. Italy. Unfortunately we ran out of time so we were unable to report on every single throw, which was a shame, but from what we saw - WOW! Next up… Standing long jump!

Brazil was up first, one of the best in their country was Leighton. However, Corey just about managed to sweep the glory from underneath Leighton’s feet, beating him by a whopping 30cm! Over in the other pit, it was time to find another Year 4 star. George managed to jump an incredible 1.30m, being one of the many few to beat Corey in the pit. Again, the teachers were there for moral support. 4B got through everyone extremely quickly as they had a great system going – two goes at a time rather than just one. One of the best results in the pit was 1.65m but sweeping the success was Ethan in 4B with an outstanding 1.85m jump!

After a quick break, we had Year 6 on the field with the vortex howlers – first up we was Italy vs. Spain. Charles from 6H- team England- threw a distance of 19.5m. Myself and Avneet, one of my colleagues, caught up with Annabelle from Year 6 who said ‘I threw the howler to the fourth cone, however I feel like I could throw better next time’. Unfortunately Annabelle just missed out on hitting the fifth cone – better luck next time Annabelle. Incredibly, Jack threw a whopping 22m – how amazing is that?! Another interview we had was with Evie Mc.  We asked her what her best score was, it turns out her best throw was 8m; the throwing was her favourite part of the day so far.

I continued to follow Year 6 on their journey into the sand pit to see if their jumping was just as good as their throwing. From what we and my colleague saw, everybody tried hard and they never lost focus, keeping their sights high – going for gold.

Violet and Izzy from Year 5 told me that their favourite event was the 400m. They told me they think they could’ve improved their scores on the standing long jump, but they were happy with what they achieved throughout the day, taking part in some activities that they have never done before.

After the throwing and jumping, children from Years 3-6 took part in a 70m/100m metre race. This was done in groups of 8 and on opposite sides of the track. In the meantime, I spoke to Chelsea from Year 5 and she told me that her favourite event was boccia. This is because she ‘learnt new skills like how to work well in a team’.
