Girls Danone Cup Manchester Final
Our girls football team took on St Joseph's to decide who would be Danone Cup Manchester Champions
After being chosen as Tamesides representatives for the Danone cup after some fantastic performances in the Tameside year 5/6 monthly league competition we had the chance to follow in last years footsteps and try to get to the national finals once again. If we won the Manchester Schools girls cup final we would have qualified for the regional final in Sheffield.
However qualifying was going to be a very tricky task as we were up against the best team in Trafford,St Joseph’s in order to be crowned Greater Manchester’s top under 11 girls.
We set off just after 3 which was a good job as we had a long minibus ride across town to BTH high school in Altricham where the girls kept boredomby singing along to the radio throughout the hour journey.
When we got there the game began and there was some good football on show from both teams with MSand OC making crucial tackles. DW and CLalso looked dangerous for Greenside with some good passing. However St Josephs scored 1st to take the lead one nil although Greenside battled back well with AR showing great defensive skills and TO making a string of good saves. Seconds after FS, who impressed with her excellent skill as well such improved stamina played a lovely ball over the top for DW to run on to which she took well to level the Game at 1-1.
Soon after Greenside nearly made it two one when CL was played through by another FS pass but it was instead St Joseph’s turn to
score going 2-1. We kept battling and TO made save after save before Daisy went close to levelling again. Unfortunately for us St Joseph’s began to play even better and scored two more excellent goal before half time to leave it 4-1.
In the second half SK had some good chance and the work rate and passion was brilliant but St Josephs were the better side on the day and scored 4 more goals to earn a well deserved place in the regional finals.
However Miss Stonehewer and Mr Ellis were very impressed by our team spirit, the girls not one moaning at each other or the other team, instead working hard and showing determination to achieve their best.It wasn’t to be on the day but being the best team in Tameside is something to be very proud of.
