School Games Hockey Heats
We took 3 teams to the Tameside School Games Hockey heats where 1 team went very close to the final.
After lots of practice in Competition club and at dinner times Greenside’s three hockey teams were ready to compete at the Tameside School Games Quicksticks hockey heats.
It was a chilly night at Rayner Stephens but Team 1 braved the arctic conditions to record and excellent win in their first game. Goals from team captain RS and HK ensured that Greenside defeated Cannon Burrows 2-0 with a super attacking and defensive game.
Things were more difficult in the second game as TO, MN and JP all went very close to scoring before St George’s scored with only 3 minutes remaining.
Luckily Greenside didn’t give up and kept battling right to the end equalising through RS before RS yet again scored to give Greenside a well deserved 2-1 victory. Greenside needed to win the final game to qualify for the final the week after but unfortiunately came up against a very talented Manchester Road team who clearly had some very good hockey players. Credit to Greenside though as they battled throughout and only lost 3-0 again a team who’d convincingly won their other games.
Team 2 got off to a bad start losing their first game 3-0 to yew tree but responded well in their second game, BA and SA in particular showing some excellent defense to ensure the game finished 0-0. Greenside’s defense
was also excellent in a game against Holden Clough, keeping another clean sheet despite the other tem being dangerous throughout. At the other end Greenside kept pressing but could not get the goal and the game finished 0-0.
Team 3 started with a game again against Yew Tree, but this time their team 2. The teams both cancelled each other out with some good defense but could not score the goal they needed for victory. The second game was again really close against Bradley Green who advanced to the Manchester School games last year. They again defended well but Bradley Green got a late winner to preveil 1-0. In the last game Greenside got a little tired and came up against a brilliant Dowson team who scored lots of goals against us. But Greenside never put their heads down and kept trying.
The player of the match was HK who scored an excellent goal and worked very hard throughout.
