British Schools Orienteering Championships
South Yorkshire Orienteering juniors. Saturday 17th November BSOC, Black Park, Slough.
On Sunday 17th of November, a range of pupils from across Hunter's Bar Junior School travelled to Slough in London to compete in the British Schools Orienteering Championships. We took 16 competitors:
Louis (J1)
Leo, Isla, Jack and Lucy-Laura (J5)
Vincent, Eve and Rory (J9)
Ella, Beth, Ellen, Jess ,Lydia, Rhys (J11)
Wilson and Walter (J12)
Everybody had to get up at at least 6 o’clock to catch the coach at 6:45 it took four hours to get there and 3 and a half hours back. Our day looked something like this...
07:00 Depart Botanical Gardens
11:00 Arrive Black Park, Slough (brief stop en route at a service station)
11:30-12:30 Competition start times
13:30 Prizegiving
14:30 Depart Black Park
19:00 Arrive back at Botanical Gardens (brief stop en route at a different service station)
The competition is an excellent opportunity to compete at a large, national event and everyone did incredibly well and had a really fun day. Our top scores were Ella who came 1st, Walter came 4th (only a few seconds off 3rd!), Wilson came 6th and Rory, Beth, Lucy-Laura and Isla all came 7th. Those scores added up to HBJ becoming British Orienteering Champions!
The Year 6 girls won with a team of 5. The Year 6 boys narrowly missed out on a podium place as one of the boys sadly missed a control (a check-point that you need to get to). The Year 5 girls did not have a full team however the pair that did compete came 7th an incredible score since they had not done much orienteering before. The Year 5 boys came 4th, trying their very hardest to achieve their goal. The course was quite difficult especially if you are running your hardest because it was easy to get ahead of yourself.
Because we won, we had plenty of chocolates and sweets on the way back so we were very hyped up.
We would like to congratulate all the pupils that competed as together we all became British Orienteering Champions something that we can be very proud of.
