11th November 2019-Mercia School

Sports Hall Athletics

On Monday 11 November 2019, some selected children from our school (20 boys and 20 girls) went down to Mercia School to compete in the School Games Sports Hall Athletics competition against Meersbrook Bank, Ecclesall and Dobcroft. We were split into boys and girls teams, assigned a maximum of two track events and a field event-all that could make a big difference to the final scoring.

The field events were:

1. Chest Push

2. Seated Throw

3. Speed Bounce

4. Standing Long Jump

5. Target throw

The track events were:

1. 1 Lap Individual Sprint

a. One lap race for one competitor from each school

2. 2 Lap Individual Sprint

a. Two lap race for one competitor from each school

3. 1 Lap Individual Hurdles

a. One lap race for one competitor from each school over small hurdles

4. 2 Lap Individual Hurdles

a. Two lap race for one competitor from each school over small hurdles

5. 2 x 3 Lap Distance Race

a. A 6 lap race with two competitors from each school

6. 4 x 1 Lap Relay

a. A 4 lap race with each competitor running one lap

7. 4 x 1 Lap Hurdles Relay

a. A 4 lap race with each competitor running one lap over hurdles

8. Obstacle 4 x 1 relay

a. A 4 lap race with one competitor running one lap

9. Mixed Relay

a. A 4 lap race with 2 boys and 2 girls from each school

I took part in mixed relay, 1 lap sprint and standing long jump. They were all equally challenging and I needed a lot of resilience as we had some tough opposition from the other pupils from competing schools. On the day, the girls team did better than the boys as they scored less points in their events.

The scoring system was similar to golf in the lowest score won and every event had every position scoring. If you came 1st you'd score 1 point, 2nd scored 2 points, 3rd scored 3 points and 4th scored 4 points.

The final scores were

1.Dobcroft-49 points

2.Ecclesall-53 points

3.Meersbrook-74 points

4.Hunters Bar Juniors-87 points

A valiant effort from HBJ pupils and I enjoyed it even though we did not come the position that we were hoping to...1st place...Good luck to Dobcroft in the finals on the 22nd of November.
