Raj's experience of gaining a sports scholarship at Westbourne School for September 2020-21

Sports Scholarship

Scholarships at Westbourne are awarded on the basis of evidence of exceptional recent achievement, performance in the scholarship exams and an interview.

There are five categories of scholarship: 1. Academic 2. Music 3. Sport 4. Drama/Performing Arts 5. All round (–Academic + Music + Drama or Sport).

Sports scholars will represent Westbourne School and be ambassadors of the School’s sporting values in their chosen field. They are offered a strength & conditioning programme, will be allocated a mentor and offered one to one coaching and support to prepare them for competition. Sports scholars will undertake a leadership role within their chosen sport to inspire others and to be a peer mentor to a fellow student.

Raj recently took his Sports Scholarship and helps to give us some insight into the day.

“I started the day of by sitting down my academic exams which included Maths, English and Non-verbal reasoning.
Next was English I had to do a piece of work that had to have no punctuation mistakes, correct spellings and had to be entertaining. After English it was Maths which wasn’t a test but involved group work for us to test our maths skills. Finally we got to the part I was most looking forward to...Sports…
The sports testing included looking at my speed and agility and Strength/Balance. We got the chance to play some games to demonstrate our skills. In football, I scored a hat trick (three goals) and when we played basketball, I scored 8pts. After the games, we were taken to Hallam sports hall where we participated in some great teamwork games and had one more test to see how far we could jump. Overall, I came first in the sports testing and gained a scholarship.
I have to go back to Westbourne to let them know if I would like to join them for secondary school. I had a great day at Westbourne and I’m pretty happy that I got a scholarship. I've enjoyed my time at HBJ and I think I’d really fit in well at Westbourne. I have my SATs to sit and a few sports fixtures to compete including the Y6 football leagues and the Lindy Hop, but I can’t wait to get started at Westbourne in September.”

As a fantastic ambassador for Sport in Hunter’s Bar Juniors we can’t wait to hear how Raj does in his sporting role at Westbourne and have no doubt he’ll be a success in whatever he undertakes.  We would also like to congratulate all our pupils who took scholarship opportunities at Westbourne, Birkdale and Sheffield High School for Girls. We wish them all the best for the next academic year wherever they choose to go to for secondary school.
