School Games Day (14/06/19)
We changed our Sports Day formula again this year – we added a competitive element for KS2 before a picnic lunch, and then the whole school inter-house competition.
With parents in attendance, we ran our finals of the 50m and 100m for Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 boys and girls. We used an iPad to record the children crossing the finish line and we played it back frame by frame to ensure accurate placings! The top three children in each race were awarded winner ribbons. We also shared with the parents the results of the athletic event we did last week which included the 600m, standing long jump, standing triple jump and vortex howler throw.
The Bishop Luffa Sports Leaders arrived whilst the children were having lunch, and they helped us set up for the afternoon. The school was divided in to their 4 house teams, and these were divided into 7 smaller teams of mixed year groups, each led by a Y6.
•Continuous relay with a baton – children line up. Run around a cone 10 metres away and back with a baton, pass it to the next person to go. Each time it is passed, they score 1.
•Goalball cone challenge – children to line up and roll a ball between two cones then retrieve it and pass it to the next person. Point for each time it goes between the cones.
•Vortex Howler Throw – mark out flags at 5 metres (1 point), 10 metres (2 points), 15 metres (3 points). Children line up and throw vortex when told. Score points. Retrieve vortex howlers.
•Ladder run – lay out running ladders. Children run “through” the ladders, then back to tag the next in the line to run. One point each time they negotiate the ladder on the way out.
•Sponge run – children collect a sponge, soak it in a bucket of water, run 10 metres and squeeze it out in to a container. Run back and give it to next in queue. Points awarded to the group who collects the most water – 4 points for most, then 3, then 2 etc.
•Bean bag relay – children run out, drop bean bag in hoop, run to the cone at the end, touch it, run back, pick up bean bag and pass to next child. One point for each successful handover. Football through the gate – children dribble the ball through two cones and then turn and dribble it back to next person. Point for each time it goes through the cones.
Jokers – (one of) the Y6(s) will be carrying a joker. If they decide to “play” it before the event, then the number of points that they earn doing the event is doubled. The Joker must be handed to the Sports Leader handling the event before the whistle to begin the event is sounded.
Scoring – once the scores have been finalised by the Sports Leader, one of the Y5s is to take the results to the scoring table (in the centre) whilst the other children move on to the next event. The Y5 will then move on to join them.
Ash: 142 points; Beech: 159 points; Maple: 149 points; Oak: 152 points.
Beech wins!
