5 school teams squashed on to Court One to get ready for the competition...

Squash semi-final (04/12/18)

After their weeks of training in the school hall, and a session on a squash court, 5 intrepid Y6s headed down to Chichester Racquet and Squash Club for the semi-finals of an inter-school squash-themed competition.

The first activity was based on netball, and involved passing a ball and trying to get it into the corner of the court.  Play was fast and frantic in the first game against Mundham.

We were 3-0 up by half time.

The knobbly ball was passed well by both teams, but we had most of the possession and ended up winning 4-1.

The next activity was forehand drives - to see how many times in 2 minutes you can hit the ball in to the wall without missing it.

Jake managed 44. Lucia scored 65. Florence, our left handed player, struggled a little with this, but persevered. Her highest score was 10. Ben, after a shaky start, found his rhythm and racked up a score of 67! Theo was next and, showing his usual calm and determined manner, managed a score of 19. This gave us a total of 205.

Next up was Squicket - bowler throws the ball to bounce off the front wall. The opposing team returns the “serve” and runs. Chaos ensues!

Ben caught the first North Mundham batsman out after 4 runs. The next after just one. A few more runs and then we swapped over.

Ben scored 3. Jake 1. Theo 1. Florence 1. Lucia 1.

The next activity was the backhand drive.

Jake got a score of 44, Lucia a score of 46, Florence a score of 18, Theo a score of 5 and Ben finished with a score of 15. A grand total of 128.

Next up was the netball-style game, this time against The March school. At half time it was 1-1.

We went 2-1 up, but play swung the other way and we were soon 2-3 down with only a minute on the clock. Our equalising goal was disallowed as it was fractionally after the final whistle.

Cooperation Rally was next - how many consecutive rally shots can a pair make? Ben and Jake got a max of 15. Theo and Florence scored 12. Jake went again with Lucia and scored 72.

The March then played us at the cricket-inspired game. It was close, but we won thanks to a superb performance by Lucia.

After a break, they then served the ball to score points - 2 point score for a legal serve and 1 for one that is close! Each child had 5 serves. Jake scored 8, Ben scored 5, Theo scored 4 points, Florence scored 8 points and Lucia scored 8.

Next up was a final games of squetball, this time against Lavant School. We were 4-0 down by half time. I’m not sure what the final score was, having lost track after 5-2, but Lavant played very well.

The next task was serving from the left hand side of the county. Ben scored 10, Jake scored 10, Theo scored 5, Florence scored 4 points and Lucia scored 5 points.

The final game was squicket against Lavant School. They scored 7. We went in to bat, chasing this score... we got 10.

We won, with a final overall score of 24 points.

The Finals are next week!
