KS2 Sportshall Athletics

A number of children from Year 4, 5 and 6 took part in a fun-filled morning of indoor athletics at Chessington School. The SHA squad did wonderfully; read here to find out how they got on in more detail.

KS2 Sportshall Athletics

On Wednesday 6th March 2019, nineteen excited pupils (see team photo) from Year 4, 5 and 6 took part in a Sportshall Athletics event in Chessington School’s gymnasium. This morning inter-school sports event, consisted of six local primary schools, which included Grand Avenue and Tolworth Juniors, competing against each other in a range of athletic disciplines.

In the lead up to this event, many of the team members took part in an after-school training session to familiarise themselves with the track and field events. This training certainly paid dividends as all O.L.I competitors performed fantastically. Each team member had the opportunity to participate in two track events and two field events. Such events included: team relay races, standing long jump, speed bounce and soft javelin to name but a few.

As a team, O.L.I did brilliantly winning several of the team relay races. I was particularly impressed with the smooth baton exchanges from child to child and how pupils were able to recall key rules for the more complicated events such as the obstacle relay race. Also, the O.L.I. squad did tremendously in the field events, which mainly focused on throwing and jumping skills. All pupils were able to better their personal bests during the three rounds of their field event.

It was evident to see how much the children enjoyed this event. They took part with great effort, enthusiasm and endeavour; it really was a joy to witness. Additionally, all children were very supportive of each other throughout and celebrated one another’s achievements. The O.L.I. team truly did ‘thrive together as a team’. Many congratulations to all team members.

I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Attalah, Mrs Proudlove and Miss Simmonds, who provided support going to and from the venue, in addition to during the event itself. Finally, please view a range of photographs taken from this exciting and unique event by visiting the school website.
