Year 2 Football Festival
Recently seven pupils from Year 2 took part in a festival in the grounds of Surbiton High School. Read on to see how they got on during the afternoon.
Year 2 Football Festival
On Thursday 7th February 2019, seven children from Year 2 represented the school in a fun football festival in the playing fields of Surbiton High. For several of the children it was their first opportunity to take part in an inter-school sports event. The team were excited and full of enthusiasm as they took on primary schools from the local area on a lovely sunny winter’s afternoon.
Upon arrival, the team performed a range of warm-up drills in preparation for the festival and after an opening presentation from the event organiser it was time for the football to start. In the first group stage O.L.I were placed with Malden Parochial, Surbiton Prep (Green) and St Agatha’s. The team played with great passion, which was most definitely shown in their resolute defensive work. The children also gained confidence in attacking as they scored several fantastic goals. The highlight of this group stage was a 3-0 victory against St Agatha’s.
Following the first three matches, O.L.I were then placed with two schools from Surbiton Prep and Alexandra in the second group stage. The team continued to develop their skills, this was certainly evident with a 4-1 victory against Surbiton (Blue). The children really enjoyed this unique sports experience.
This can be seen in what they reported about this event:
Faran: ‘I think we did well for scoring lots of goals.’
Leo: ‘I enjoyed it because I’m a good defender.’
Symon: ‘We scored lots of goals.’
Robyn: ‘I think I did very well.’
Jai: ‘I think we played well.’
Michael: ‘As a team we scored lots of goals.’
Maku: ‘We showed fair play.’
I was thoroughly impressed with how the children behaved during the afternoon. They listened well to instructions; were supportive of each other and showed respect to their opponents. The children should all be very proud of their performances; they displayed superb levels of effort and enthusiasm as they went on to win three matches.
I would like to thank the parents and carers who provided transport going to the venue. Also, many thanks to the parents who supported the team during the course of the festival. Please visit the news section on the school website to view photographs taken from this event.
