Six girls successfully took part in a Year 3 Borough Football Festival in the grounds of Kew AFC. Read this blog for the full details.
On Wednesday 20th March six-year 3 pupils (see photograph) took part in a Borough Year 3 Girls’ Football Festival in the grounds of Kew AFC. The 6-a-side festival consisted of 15 local primary schools taking part in a series of 8-minute matches. In group 3, O.L.I. came up against St John’s, Alexandra, Fern Hill and Christ Church New Malden (CCNM).
After a brief introduction by the event organiser, the girls were excited to get the action underway in their first encounter against St John’s. The girls started on the front foot with several attempts on goal. While the team were unfortunate not to take an early lead, this pressure soon told with O.L.I. scoring a late winner to win by one goal to nil. In the second match against CCNM, the girls displayed far more confidence both in attack and defence. The team’s passing was becoming more accurate and the girls were dribbling more fluently. The girls were again worthy winners as they won 3-1.
Next up for O.L.I was a fixture against a strong Fern Hill team. The team again started on the front foot and took an early lead with a well-worked team goal. Despite displaying great commitment in defence, the opponents managed to score. However, this didn’t dampen the girls spirts as they went on to score another goal shortly after. The match eventually finished evenly with both teams scoring two goal apiece. After a final break, the girls were ready to play their final match against Alexandra. The team saved their best attacking performance until last, as they dominated possession from first minute until last. From numerous shots on goal, the team scored three excellent goals to win the match 3-0.
It was an absolute pleasure to lead the girls at this event. They all displayed fantastic qualities throughout the festival and really ‘thrived together as a team’, taking great delight in each other’s success. In every match and during drills when having breaks in play, the girls showed great enthusiasm, and all had a smile on their face. With an unbeaten record of three wins and one draw, the girls should be incredibly proud of their performance in this event. This great footballing display is an excellent sign for future years- well done girls!
I would like to thank the parents and carers who provided transport going to the venue and for the support during the festival itself. Finally, please view the sport news section on the school website to view more photographs of the team in action.
