Year 4 Indoor Tennis Festival

On Wednesday 27th February 2019, four pupils from Year 4 took part in an Indoor tennis festival at Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club. After lunchtime training sessions in school, Ben, Shimary, Basil and Emily (see photo) were really excited to represent O.L.I in this event.

After travelling to the Club and having packed lunches in the fantastic sunshine overlooking the Club’s grass courts, the children completed a range of warm-up drills whilst waiting for the festival to get underway. The eight local primary schools taking part in the festival were split up into two groups. In the group-stage O.L.I’s squad competed against Lime Tree, Grand Avenue, Christ Church New Malden and St Paul’s Hook. Whilst the children played individually against their other school counterparts, they collected results as a team. O.L.I started the festival well with all pupils winning at least one match in the opening two rounds.

Our team did brilliantly during the course of the event, both in terms of the interest and enthusiasm that they displayed, in addition to the development of their tennis skills. Each team member certainly made great progress and were rightly very proud of their performances. Due to winning a total of 10 matches, O.L.I came in a superb 2nd place, winning a team medal which is now on display in our school’s trophy cabinet.

The children all had a fantastic experience representing our school in this event. This enthusiasm and excitement can be seen in what the pupils had to report:

Ben: ‘I think we did well as a group and I thoroughly enjoyed it.’

Shimary: ‘I had so much fun and I won three rounds!’

Basil: ‘It was really exciting when entering the Club and was really fun to play against others.’

Emily: ‘I had lots of fun and I found it really exciting when we started a match.’

Many thanks to Emily’s Mum who kindly assisted with travelling to and from the venue, in addition to supporting the children during the course of the event. Please see the ‘Sports News’ section on the school website to see a range of photographs taken on the day of the event. Finally, I would like to congratulate the four participating pupils. They wonderfully represented our school, showing great levels of fair play and behaviour throughout the afternoon.
