Year 5 Girls' Football Success
IT'S BACK!!! Read the report on the Year 5 Girls' football team taking part in the first inter-school sports event of the academic year.
After a well-deserved summer break for pupils and staff alike, it was time for inter-school sports festivities to continue. Taking part in the first sports event of the academic year, it was the chance for eight girls from Year 5 to shine in the footballing arena. On Tuesday 18th September 2018 following a team training session in school, the team were competing against six schools in the grounds of Chessington School (formerly CCC).
In the first match against Latchmere the team started nervously as they conceded an early goal. However, from this moment on the girls played with excellent passion and skill. This was certainly shown by midfielder Tashny who scored the leveller with O.L.I unfortunate not to win the match. In the next match the girls played SASM and put on a fantastic attacking display scoring an impressive five goals. In this match, striker Yasmin scored a number of goals with defender Maia also getting in on the act with a long-range effort. O.L.I eventually went on to win this match 5-2. This provided the girls with the confidence to continue their unbeaten run.
Following this confidence-building victory O.L.I competed against Surbiton Prep. Despite dominating possession, and having several goal-bound efforts, O.L.I struggled to make the breakthrough. However, this was until forward Zofia scored with a great shot which came from a well-worked team move. In this match goalkeeper Cassie made crucial saves to ensure a clean sheet and 1-0 victory. Thankfully the girls enjoyed a short break in the competition which they used to re-hydrate, take on healthy snacks and talk tactics with coach/referee Mr Keady.
In the fourth match against St Agatha’s O.L.I continued to dominate possession which was helped by the passing and attacking skills shown by Karolina, Alexandra and Grace. O.L.I’s unbeaten record was to continue as the even contest ended in a 1-1 draw. The penultimate match saw the girls compete against Malden Parochial. Although the team were again on top, they found the opposing goalkeeper in fine form. However, the pressure soon told as O.L.I managed to score a quick-fire brace to win the match 2-0. Fern Hill were the opponents in the final match and the girls battled valiantly throughout the encounter. Despite conceding an early goal the team played well and were deserving of a reply which came at the mid-point of the match. The match appeared to be heading for a hard-fought draw; however, Fern Hill managed to find the back of the net in the final moments.
With an overall record of three wins, two draws and only one loss the team amassed a wonderful point tally of 22 out of a possible 30. The team came in joint second position; however, due to scoring one less goal the team were unfortunate not to automatically qualify for The Kingston/Richmond Year 5 festival in April. Despite this the girls should be very proud of their amazing efforts. It was a pleasure to lead the event and witness first-hand the enthusiasm, teamwork and fair play that the girls displayed throughout the competition. Many thanks to the parents and carers who provided transport for the team and excellent support during the afternoon’s play. See the school website for more photographs taken at this event.
