Year 5/6 Cross-Country Championships
The day had finally come. Despite rainy weather conditions, 30 children took part in the prestigious Kingston Cross-Country Championships. Read on to find out about the great performances by our children.
On Wednesday 16th October 2019, 30 children from across Year 5 and Year 6 (see squad photo) took part in Kingston’s Cross-Country Championships. The event, held in the sports grounds of Kingston Grammar School, is the biggest autumn inter-school competition with over 30 primary schools participating. Following in-school trials and before-school training sessions, the children were all really excited to compete against the best long-distance runners in the Borough.
The Championships consists of children running a two-kilometre distance in their given race category. Although the children were running as individuals, they were also collecting points which resulted in team positions for each race category. As you can see below, the teams did fantastically with all teams achieving a top-ten finish. This included a wonderful 3rd place finish for the Year 6 Girls.
O.L.I’s team results:
Year 5 Girls: 8th out of 31 schools
Year 5 Boys: 5th out of 31 schools
Year 6 Girls: 3rd out of 31 schools (bronze medallists).
Year 6 Boys: 6th out 31 schools
It was fantastic the witness the energy, enthusiasm and perseverance that all pupils displayed during the morning’s races. In addition, our children were all very supportive of each other showing great teamwork, this included when watching races as spectators. I would like to congratulate all team members for taking part in this year’s Cross- Country Championships. They all represented our school brilliantly and should be very proud of how they contributed towards a very successful school performance.
I would like to extend my thanks to Mrs Proudlove and Mrs Rosato for wonderfully providing additional support at the venue. Also, many thanks to the parents and carers for providing transport to and from the venue and for those who stayed and supported the children during the event. This is very much appreciated, particularly given the turbulent weather conditions on the day. Finally, please visit the ‘Sports News’ section on the school website to view a wide range of photographs taken from this event.
