Year 5/6 Netball High-Five Championships
On Thursday 22nd February 2018, nine members of O.L.I’s Friday Netball Club took part in the annual Kingston High-Five Netball Championships. The High-Five event is the biggest spring term competition in the Borough with 24 primary schools competing. Despite battling freezing conditions, spirits were high and the O.L.I’s team members (see photo below) were eager to get their group matches started.
First, was a match-up against Corpus Christi. O.L.I started the match well with three quick goals in the first half. The attacking endeavour that O.L.I displayed in this match was a signpost for what was to come later in the competition. By the end of the match, O.L.I came out victorious with a score line of 6-1. In the remaining two group matches O.L.I played Malden Parochial and Tolworth. These matches were both close and tense affairs. However, the team displayed a determined attitude and really impressed with defensive aspects such as rebounding and steals. This resulted in O.L.I winning all three of their group matches and qualifying for the cup play-offs; although, the children didn’t have much time to celebrate as this was to start straight away!
O.L.I’s positive ‘pass and move’ approach was certainly transferred into the play-off matches, which was against two fellow group winners. The team did tremendously well to win one of these matches to qualify for the Cup’s third place play-off against King Athelstan. O.L.I started the match fantastically, scoring three goals without reply. Despite their opponents making it a slightly nervous second half with some goals of their own, O.L.I managed to win the match and with it achieve a bronze medal position.
I would like to congratulate the children on their wonderful performances during the competition. The children represented the school in a brilliant manner and it was great to see the enjoyment that they experienced throughout the morning’s play.

I would like to extend my gratitude for all the parents and carers who provided transport to and from the venue. Additionally, many thanks to those who stayed and braved the elements to support the team. Finally, I would like to thank Sarai’s grandmother who kindly and expertly refereed all of O.L.I’s matches during the course of the competition; this was very much appreciated.
