Year 5/6 Rounders Festival
On a recent scorching June afternoon, nine pupils took part in a summer rounders festival. Read this for a full report.
On Wednesday 27th June 2018, nine pupils from across Year 5 and Year 6 participated in an event based on the summer sport: rounders. Following PE lessons and after-school training sessions, the team were ready to transfer key skills and learnt rules to a festival which consisted of twelve primary schools.
O.L.I were placed in a group with Christ Church, New Malden and Ellingham. In their opening match against CCNM, O.L.I made a flying start quickly registering a number of rounders in their opening ‘good’ balls. The team were well placed at the half-way stage with 4 ½ rounders scored. However, despite fielding with energy and determination, CCNM were victorious as they scored 6 ½ rounders in their reply. O.L.I’s second match was even closer with a difference of one rounder between both teams. Unfortunately, O.L.I were the unlucky losers; however, this didn’t dampen enthusiasm too much and the team were ready to change their record in their two remaining fixtures.
Competing against Grand Avenue in two consecutive matches, O.L.I performed to an excellent level in batting, fielding and bowling. Whilst the first match was a closely contested match-up, ending in a high-scoring draw, it was the final encounter where all of the children’s skills were fully showcased. O.L.I limited their opponents to only 3 rounders in the opening innings. Cheered on by supporting parents/carers, O.L.I produced several fantastic shots which allowed them to score an impressive 7 ½ rounders and therefore win the final match.
Battling extremely hot conditions, the participating children did fantastically well and should be proud of their efforts. Throughout the afternoon the team were very supportive of each other and played all matches in the right way- in a fun and spirited fashion. Congratulations to: Johnwel, Sarai, Natalie, Oliver, Matthew, Kimberley, Vijaya, Perujan and Chester. Many thanks to the parents/carers for providing transport to the venue and for those who stayed and supported the team at the festival.
