Year 5/6 Tennis Festival

On Thursday 24th May 2018 four pupils represented the school at a Borough tennis competition at Surbiton Racket and Fitness Centre. In total, sixteen local schools were participating at a fun-filled afternoon of tennis. Although the morning cloudy skies were an early ominous sign, they soon cleared, and it was perfect conditions for this summer sport.

While all children were playing individually against counterparts from three other schools, which included CCNM, Robin Hood and Castle Hill, the team were working collectively to win as many matches as possible. In the first match-up against CCNM the team performed admirably and were able to transfer key skills from PE lessons to a competitive situation. Despite this, O.L.I lost the first encounter; however, this didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm. During a break in play the team were able to use the Club’s wonderful clay surfaces to train on and this seemed to make a vital difference moving forward.

Against Robin Hood all pupils displayed an impressive array of winning shots, particularly causing their opponents a problem with their accurate serving. O.L.I went on to win this encounter by the score line of four games to nil. In the final group match against Castle Hill, the children demonstrated excellent forehand shots which resulted in many winning points. O.L.I were again victorious in all matches- a great achievement!

Unfortunately, the team didn’t quite make it into the semi-finals; however, I would like to congratulate the children on performing excellently throughout the afternoon. I was extremely impressed with not just the skill level on display, but the way in which each team member played with a great team-spirit. They were very supportive of each other throughout and in the process showed to be excellent ambassadors for our school.

Finally, I would like to thank Mrs Egan for her great support in travelling to and from the venue with the children, in addition to supporting the team at the event. Please visit the school website to view a range of photographs that were taken of the team.
