It was the girls' turn as they took on all comers in the Year 6 Kwik Cricket Championships. Read on to see the history that they created.

Year 6 Girls' Kwik Cricket Championships

On Wednesday 5th June 2019, eight girls took part in the Kwik Cricket Championships which was again hosted in the sports grounds of Kingston Grammar School. Despite the suspect weather conditions, the team’s excitement was certainly not dampened as they were keen to transfer practised skills from after-school training to the competitive arena.

The competition consisted of 24 teams, split up into groups of three, all vying to be named the best in the Borough. O.L.I faced Grand Avenue and Green Lane in the group stage. O.L.I. started against Green Lane by bowling, collecting a number of wickets in the late stages to be in control at the half-way stage. The girls scored runs at a good rate, winning the opener by 17 runs. The maths was simple: win against Grand Avenue and a place in the quarter final was guaranteed. On this occasion, O.L.I. batted first and posted an impressive score of 263. Despite some nervy moments, the girls fielded well holding a number of excellent catches. Victory was O.L.I’s by a margin of 21 runs.

Malden Parochial were the team’s next opponents. O.L.I. bowled exceptionally well, limiting the opposition to only a handful of boundaries. The girls knew what they had to do: score a run differential of 44 runs and victory was theirs. The tight contest went to the last over; however, with 8 runs scores and no wickets conceded a place in the final four was guaranteed. In the semi-final clash, O.L.I played an experienced Holy Cross Prep team. The girls batted well, conceding very few wickets, however the team found boundaries hard to come by. O.L.I. posted a score of 237-2 which unfortunately was not enough to secure victory given the power hitting of Holy Cross. However, this disappointment didn’t last long as O.LI. took part in a 3rd place play-off versus King Athelstan. The girls bowled and fielded excellently in restricting their opponents to a run differential of 18 (218-6). With the finishing line in sight, the team batted powerfully to score a range of 4s and 6s to win the match in comfortable fashion.

I would like to congratulate Rhiannon, Shireen, Rebecca, Marissa, Erin, Holly, Annie and Jessica on their excellent performances. The team impressively won 4 out of 5 matches and were deserving bronze medalists. This is a tremendous achievement and the best result our school has achieved in a Borough cricket competition- HISTORY MAKERS! The girls behaved impeccably and were very encouraging of each other, displaying great teamwork. Additionally, it was pleasing to witness the development of the girls’ cricketing skills as the competition progressed. They particularly improved with the accuracy of their bowling and gaining runs by running between the wickets.

I would like to thank the parents and carers who kindly provided transport going to and from the venue. Finally, I hope that the girls enjoyed this opportunity and that many of the team pursue cricket in secondary school
