Year 6 Table Tennis Qualifier

Following in-school trials and training sessions, four children from Year 6 took part in a Borough table tennis qualifier at Latchmere School on Wednesday 5th May 2019. The qualifier consisted of a two-team boys’ competition and a two-team girls’ competition, with O.L.I. participating alongside Malden Parochial, Lovelace, Corpus Christi and Robin Hood.

The round robin format resulted in fast and furious play. Each team member played a two-minute match against their counterparts; 8 competitive matches in total. With 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 for a loss, it really was all to play for in the hope of qualifying for the Borough Finals. All of O.L.I’s squad played excellently throughout the competition. They displayed great enthusiasm, perseverance and the  skill level displayed was to a very high standard.

While the team were pretty tired by the end of the competition, they were all rightly proud of their performances. After a short interval, which the O.L.I. squad used to play their favourite game ‘around the table’, the event organiser announced the results. Firstly, the girls’ results were read out. With a total of 38 points, O.L.I’s girls came a valiant 3rd place out of the five schools, narrowly missing out on 2nd place and qualification by only one point. O.L.I’s boys scored an impressive 42 point total and managed joint 2nd position which meant qualifying for the Borough Finals.

As already stated, the team had a very fun afternoon in this unique sports event. Read below for the views of each team member:

· Lucas: I really liked the table tennis tournament. I’m looking forward to the finals.’

· Rhiannon: ‘I really enjoyed it and I think we did very well as team.’

· Keir: ‘I also enjoyed the tournament and I can’t wait for the finals.’

· Shireen: ‘We did well but unluckily missed out by 1 point.’

I would like to congratulate O.L.I’s squad for representing our school in such a great manner. Additionally, I would like to thank the parents who kindly provided transport and for their support at the venue. Finally, the Boys’ Table Tennis Finals will be on Monday 1st July so watch this space!
