Mini- basketball tournament 4th place for Spurcroft Scorpions

The school took part in the annual mini-basketball tournament along with 10 other school teams from West Berkshire: Francis Baily, St Finians, Pangbourne, Woolhampton, Whitelands. The children that had been chosen were those that had been taking part in basketball club with Mr Risdale on Tuesday lunchtime.

Spurcroft had entered 2 teams: Spurcroft Scorpions and Spurcroft Swifts. The games would be fast and furious requiring the teams to work together showing resilience and determination. The teams were split into 2 groups with the top teams facing one another in the final.

Spurcroft Swifts supported by Mrs Morgan worked well but had a tough group and didn’t win any games, however throughout the tournament continually improving. They finished 6th in their group and didn’t progress through to the finals.

Spurcroft Scorpions started strong with the children winning their 1st match against St Finians Foxes 10-6 with great baskets from Sanjeet, Ben and Lorena. Their 2nd game they won 16-12 against Pangbourne Pythons. The children showed pace, accurate passing and movement and some fantastic shooting with Sanjeet scoring 6 baskets. The next game would be alittle tougher with the opposition Francis Baily Bulldogs contesting play more and this game resulted in a draw 4-4. We then faced Whitelands Wildcats and played with confidence and great defensive work to win 14-0 not allowing the opposition to score any baskets. A tougher game followed against Woolhampton Warriors where we came from behind to win 8-6.

The group results were in and the Scorpions had finished 2nd in their group – we now faced a final match for 3rd/4th play-off against Pangbourne Pirates. Unfortunately the Pirates had height and strength on their side and with accurate shots they beat the Scorpions. The Scorpions had finished 4th overall out of 12 teams – a good result as many of the players our Year 5.

Congratulations to the children, who represented the school fantastically, encouraged and supported each other team and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament.

Well done to: Scorpions: Sanjeet Garood, Edward Cain, Ben Richardson, Ivan Pathrantha , Lorena Catalan-Lopez, Spurcroft Swifts: Henry Morgan, Tommy Frewing, William Appleby, Connor Roles, Shlok Chopra and Jess Argyle.
