Year 6 Netball

A group of Year 6 pupils went on a voyage to Rugeley Leisure Centre to compete against fourteen other schools in a Hi-Five Netball tournament. The team began by battling their way through the biggest of the groups, winning all three games against Chancel, St. Mary’s and Etching Hill which would later lead them into a mouth-watering semi-finals clash against Littleton Green. As the team’s confidence grew so did their nerves as they eagerly watched on the other semi-final which St. Joseph’s won, beating St. Luke’s. As the John Bamford team stepped onto the court you could feel the apprehension in the air and the tension until the first whistle became unbearable. A place in the final was up for grabs and this was an opportunity we weren’t about to let go of without leaving every ounce of effort and spirit on the court, and this proved too much for our opponents as we ran away with a three point victory and marched into the final winning every game so far; but this form was matched by the other finalists. Going into the final we were massive underdogs as our opponents were the reigning champions but as the game began we took an early one-nil lead. As the clock ticked down St. Joseph’s began to find their feet and pegged the scores back to one-one. As the game reached its final stages we took the lead back and scraped into a two-one lead. At this stage we had played an extra game then the other finalists and this showed as our opponents equalized leaving the game as a stalemate as the full time whistle blew. How would the game be decided? Next point wins! As the teams swapped ends players from both sides had chances to win it but the final blow was dealt by St. Joseph’s winning three-two. Such devastation and heartbreak initially hit our squad but as a group we reflected on the day and what a wonderful spirit and determination was shown as we left with our heads held high and smiles all around with such a sense of achievement.
