Small Schools' Sports hall athletics event at Tewkesbury School

Sports Hall Athletics Competition

On a bright and sunny Friday afternoon, 24 of our KS2 children competed in the small schools' sportshall athletics event at Tewkesbury School.

This event is always one that we look forward to in the sports calendar and it most definitely did not disappoint.

As we entered the sports hall, both of our teams were given two different coloured vests, maroon and yellow. The competition began with the very fun and exciting obstacle relay which involved sprinting, speed bounces, high leg runs and hurdles. After a very clear demonstration, the two teams and the other competitors were raring to go! Both teams performed extremely well and really enjoyed their event.

As the children got ready for the girls' 1-1 and 2-2 relays, the first set of boys were sent to their first fielding event, including: standing long jump, triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce and the chest push.

In the girls' sprint races, both teams achieved very well, including a second place position gained by yellow team. Well done to Harriet and Martha who worked extremely well during the 2-2 together to achieve a very quick and very impressive 2nd place in that race. Sophie and Gracie also performed brilliantly during their 1-1 relay in which Sophie started and gained us a great starting position. Gracie then fought for a second position finish, just reaching the finish time within an inch of the third team. Leah and Zoe also performed fantastically gaining yet another strong position in the race. Keira and Zoe then competed in the 2-2 relay, up against mostly Year 6 children!

As the girls finished their relays, the boys returned from their field events to begin their sprint races. The boys 1-1 and 2-2 relays then began. Aaron and Owen showed great determination during their 2-2, as well as Rhys and Freddie who ran extremely quickly!

As the field events came to a close, the children who were participating in the javelin throw prepared themselves and lined  up on the yellow line, javelin in hand.  William, Owen, Harriet, Sophie, Finlay, Oakley, Tilly and Chloe all did really, really well! It was very close!

The event ended with the 4-1 relay. A race involving 4 competitors from each team sprinting 1 lap before passing on the baton to their next team mate. Again, the determination and effort shown by each competitor was superb! Mrs Assheton and Mrs Featonby were extremely proud of how well the teams conducted themselves, how well they ran and the teamwork and positive attitudes that they demonstrated. We are very proud of you all.

At the end of the event, our youngest team were given 6th position in the competition and our yellow team achieved a 2nd position and silver Move More medal. Excellent effort everyone!
