Safe Me

Context, Intent and Target Group

What was the aim of work?

The aim of the work  was to produce a series of dryside activities - showerbursts. "We have a fantastic selection of resources to support all schools in delivering ‘dry side ‘activities – they will enable any young person to stop … think…be safe".

In association with Swim England and Canal & River Trust the resources were developed. However this progressed further when Public Health Wolverhampton, became involved and they recognised an opportunity to link other areas to keep young people safe through the RSE curriculum. We linked this with School Sports Week as it seemed apt and with NGBs. We wanted to encourage the feeling of inclusivity and Respect into Sport and Physical Activity. Both inside and outside of school so that young people can play safely.

Which outcome(s) did it focus on?

  • 4. To support the personal development of targeted young people through youth engagement and leadership

Which expectation(s) did it meet?

  • Collaborating with key partners to inform the local and county offer to tackle inequalities and ensuring inclusive and safe practice.
  • Establish a clear method of communication with all schools within the SGO area.
  • Provide an offer of professional development and communication for all schools to increase their understanding and increase their provision of 60 active minutes.

Intent

Local surroundings and events drove this initiative. To keep young people safe especially in their free time after school and holidays so they can develop into young people not affected by where they live and use all the sporting facilities that have been developed around local parks and the free offer from WV Active. Too many children in Wolverhampton do not see out their teenage years.

Aligns to Schools Games Intents of:

Implementation

The resources were sent to all schools across Wolverhampton for PE leads, RSE coordinators, SENDCOs and any school staff to use

Impact

This is difficult to establish as how do you know?  We only hear bad news not the good news and during the summer holiday if no one drowns then I hope some good came of this initiative. Playing safe including respect will be established from September with emphasis on respect agenda for schools for all activities played in Wolverhampton. Schools who delivered the initiative were hopeful it had impacted on their young people as in the local news was the inquest on 3 lads who had drowned in a local quarry.

Challenges

Young people retaining information and putting into practice in real life situation

Sustainability

The resources will be continually added to by stakeholders, NGBs and professionals in all areas and communicated through the ConnectEd Partnership weekly newsletter and their resource hub. The links have been made and established and our work compliments each other.
