School's challenge- Celebrating achievement

Context, Intent and Target Group

Background Information

Over the course of 12 weeks schools take part in the Schools challenge, running one mile a week in their schools. This opportunity is open to all pupils who would like to take part and the event engages all children.

Schools can run the 12 miles however they like. Some run it in a club, others run it as part of their PE lessons and some ask he pupils to record their running outside of school. The idea is to engage children and introduce them into a positive sport environment. By completing the mile per week, it doesn't over load the children and they can run with their friends.

KS2 children take part from all different schools across Plymouth. Once they have completed their 12 miles at school, everyone heads to Plymouth Hoe to run their final mile all together. It is an opportunity for pupils to run somewhere new with their friends and many other people like them. Not only this, but family and friends can come and watch them complete their final mile. This created a really positive atmosphere for all children taking part, as everyone clapped and cheered no matter how long it took them to run it or the challenges they faced. This would positively effect the pupils in more ways than evident in that moment, as they realise that people support them, they can achieve and succeed no matter their ability or access to extra-curricular sport.

In total nearly 3,000 children came to the Hoe that day to finish their mile and take part in this event.

What was the aim of work?

The aim of this work is to introduce children to positive competition, encourage them to take part and offer them opportunities that they may not have had before. Showing them that no matter what their abilities they can succeed in their own way.

Which outcome(s) did it focus on?

  • 2. To ensure all competition has a clear intent and creates positive experiences based on the motivation, competence and confidence of the young people that need our support the most
  • 4. To support the personal development of targeted young people through youth engagement and leadership

Which expectation(s) did it meet?

  • Developing a case study to show where you have made the most impact against local priorities, and through effective storytelling share your learning locally and nationally.
  • Work with schools to maintain and grow their active engagement in School Games.
  • Provide an offer of professional development and communication for all schools to increase their understanding and increase their provision of 60 active minutes.
  • Engage in county, regional and national networking by the Youth Sport Trust. This includes face-to-face and virtual support, Development Coach engagement, monthly updates and your termly review of your development plan.

Intent

The intent of this event was to engage pupils and celebrate achievement of all.

Target group

  • All Young People

Implementation

The 12 miles were implemented over 12 weeks in the separate schools and then the last mile was done on the Hoe together.

It was a running event but pupils could run, walk, jog, wheel or complete the challenge however they like.

Impact

The impact on the pupils is huge. Not only does it have short term effects on the pupils when they can hear and see everyone clapping and cheering for them to complete the course, but it introduces that positive experience in sports so they want to achieve again.

Challenges

It's not so much a challenge but things we over come are the volume of staff and pupils. We have a strict system in place so they are all safe. We put a strict procedure in place so protect the children and ensure they all complete the course and return back to their school areas safely.

Sustainability

This work is sustainable as we can run the event each year with the partners we collab with. We always look to engage more pupils and create a positive event environment for all whose involved.
