Greater Manchester VI Sports Day: Sport for Everyone
The 2025 Greater Manchester VI Sports Day gave children and young people with visual impairments a sports day designed for them.
Organised by Manchester Sensory Support Services and GM Moving, the event welcomed 82 participants aged 3-16 from across the region.
The day offered a range of adaptive sports, including football, cricket, baseball, athletics, cycling, goalball, and archery. Paralympic gold medallist Lora Fachie OBE inspired participants with her story, while expert coaches helped children try new activities in a safe, supportive environment.
Many children experienced sports for the first time, especially cycling. Parents and teachers reported increased confidence, enjoyment, and engagement with physical activity. Some participants joined local clubs or inclusive sessions after the event, and new friendships were formed among both children and families.
The event showed the power of inclusive sport, putting participants at the centre rather than trying to fit them into mainstream activities. Pupils summed up the day perfectly:
“Best day of the year!”
“Never been on a bike before. It was brilliant!”
“Can I come next year?”
