The School Games Team

We’re funded by Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, working hand in hand across England. Our mission? To make physical activity and school sport a daily part of young lives. We do this through a network of over 450 School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Active Partnerships in every county.

Our goals

The School Games focuses on five main outcomes. These guide everything we do to support schools and young people.

  1. More pupils active during and beyond school
  2. Inclusive, accessible competition
  3. Stronger secondary school involvement
  4. Student leadership and resource support
  5. Advocacy that gains support from local stakeholders.

Who delivers the School Games?

  • Schools: run events and competitions, both in school and with others. They also help children develop skills, build confidence, and stay active
  • Local SGOs support schools to run events, tackle inactivity, promote inclusive competition, and develop leadership - all while engaging pupils in shaping their sports journey
  • Active Partnerships provide strategic guidance, ensuring programmes meet local needs
  • Our National Consultation Group, made up of SGOs, partnership leaders, and sport body reps, meets termly to shape priorities.

Our story

Launched in 2006 as the School Games National Finals, it soon grew to include county and in-school events. Since 2010, the programme has delivered 13.4 million participation opportunities. Our focus is on reaching less active children, creating opportunities where they're needed most.

Why it matters

Because 30% of children don’t even get 30 active minutes a day, our work is vital. We’re not only encouraging sport - we’re supporting mental health, confidence, and resilience among school children.
