Leadership

The School Games gives pupils in both primary and secondary schools fantastic chances to lead and volunteer.

We encourage all schools to:

  • Ask young people for their views when planning School Games activities, and create a sport-specific workforce
  • Give pupils the chance to officiate, coach, and lead, not just take part
  • Think about wider roles around school sport so everyone can get involved.

School Sport Organising Crews and Committees

We encourage all schools to set up a School Sport Organising Crew (SSOC) in primary schools, or a Committee in secondary schools.

These groups bring together a diverse mix of pupils to plan and run intra-school sport. They play a key role in shaping the School Games. Your sport offer should include all pupils, so your Crew or Committee should be inclusive - making sure everyone finds an activity they enjoy!

What should an SSOC be responsible for?

A School Sport Organising Crew or Committee would:

  • Work with teachers and pupils to run intra-school competitions, clubs, and activities
  • Survey to find out what young people think of sport in their school
  • Report back at the end of the year on what has improved or is planned next.

By taking part, pupils gain confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills - all useful for life and future jobs.

What are the benefits of taking part?

How do I get started?

It’s simple to set up a Crew or Committee:

  1. Log in (or register if you’re new) on the School Games website
  2. Go to your dashboard and access the resource library
  3. Ask your local School Games Organiser (SGO) for training and support.
