Who are British Blind Sport?

British Blind Sport harnesses the power of sport and physical activity to transform the lives of people with sight loss, helping them lead more active, healthy, and independent lives.

They aim to empower individuals with visual impairments to get involved in sport - whether they are taking their first steps into physical activity or pursuing competitive pathways to reach their full potential.

As the National Disability Sport Organisation for people with sight loss in the UK, they offer a range of services, including:

  • Organise in-person and virtual events to introduce inclusive sports to people of all ages and abilities with sight loss.
  • Provide a sight classification system to enable participation in recreational sports and domestic competitions.
  • Support National Governing Bodies (NGBs), local clubs, and sight loss organisations in adapting their programmes to be more accessible.
  • Offer training and resources to help clubs and coaches better support blind and partially sighted athletes.
  • Research to identify the needs, challenges, and opportunities for people with sight loss in sport.

Equipment Needed

British Blind Sport has created a range of training resources to assist those who are delivering sporting sessions with support and guidance on ensuring they are inclusive for blind and partially sighted people. You can find more information here.

There are several adaptive equipment available depending on which sport an individual participates in. These may be a tapper for swimming, a tether for guide running or an audible ball for blind football. You can find adaptive equipment available to purchase here.
