A Sports Day To Remember

Avril Yates-Law, 3 Jul 2020

Another year, another sports day. However, this time, the children had to take part whilst keeping to the two metre rule. With so many changes to the Sports Day they expected at the start of the year, all of Year 2 did exceptionally well. Thanks to the help and support of Year 6 Leaders and all their hard work, the scores they got were great.

Before they moved on to the speed bounce, I spoke to Oscar, who told me that they had been learning about some famous athletes, in particular, Asher-Smith, KJT, Weir and Gemili. They had been put into teams, using these athletes as the team names. Oscar also told me that he was  "looking forward to sports day" and that , because of the two metre rule, he expected it to be "a bit weird" as well. When I asked him what event he was most looking forward to, he replied that it was the target throw.

Also in Year 6 leader Amy's  group was Lana.  Before moving on to do very well in the speed bounce and all the other activities, she told me that she was feeling good about the upcoming activities. Like Oscar, the event she was really looking forward to was the target throw.  When asked , she told me that KJT was her favourite athlete out of all of the ones she had recently been learning about.  Coincidently, this was the team she had been put into.

I then went on to talk to Arabella, another Year 2 girl. Tired but pleased, she told me that she was looking forward to the long jump, unlike her partner, Danielle, who told me that he preferred the shuttle run that he had just finished. Having just come back from the shuttle run, they was happy to be on the rest station.  Apparently, they  had  both tried very hard, and ended up with a great score . Their leader , Lucas told us that it was 'good to help the younger children'.

The next group consisted of another two Year  Twos. Hope told us that she was, like Lana, feeling quite good about sport's day. The shuttle run she had just told come from was her favourite event. Her favourite athlete seemed to be Asher-Smith, unlike her friend, Fin. Confident about sport's day, his favourite athlete was Weir. The target throw, which he had already competed in, was the event that he enjoyed the most. He was having fun on sport's day, as he likes doing PE.

Next came Jobie and Phoebe in Alfie's group. Both had loved the shuttle run most, and were having fun and enjoying a nice sport's day. Jobie had a great score on the shuttle run of five, but was just beaten by Phoebe, by one point. Sad that he couldn’t go near his friends, but still holding his head high, Jobie was my clearly finding the situation fun and strange at the same time, like we all are these days.

Then came Maisie and her partner Leighton. Exhausted after their fun-filled sport's day, they were enjoying having a rest. Because they had been doing activities with out a rest for longer than the rest, I mostly let them relax on their break. I did ask them what their favourite event was and what scores they got on them. Maisie responded to these questions by telling me that she thought that the target throw was the best. This is no surprise, as her best score was a fantastic 10  points! Leighton, however, would much rather do the shuttle run. Though pleased to be doing something they would normally do in school, Maisie and Leighton were also finding the situation a little awkward.   They are not alone. Leighton and Maisie’s leader was Holly,  who told me that she was also finding things strange. She also told me that she was excited to do more leading.

I then went on to see Billy on the long jump. He achieved 1m 15cm, a brilliant score that he managed to beat by getting 1 m 18cm as his best score. However, Nial scraped the glory from under his feet, as his best score was 1.20m. It doesn’t even stop there. Both Remy and Isaac ended up with astonishing scores of 1m 28cm. This is not the only thing Remy is good at. He also got a score of 20 on the target throw. Billy also seems to be talented at many things, achieving a score of 35 on the speed bounce.

Everyone tried very hard this sport's day, which is shown in their fantastic scores. it just goes to show that anything really is possible if you put your mind to it.  These children had no idea that their next sport's day would be so different, but they stayed positive and kept on going, a shining example of what we all should try to do. They remembered the school games values and kept in mind that things will get better.

Finally, we would all like to say thank you to everyone who helped make sports day possible. The children competing got some wonderful results and had a great attitude. The leaders were patient with the children and helped explain what to do at times when they did not understand. All in all, everyone showed a shining example of determination, honesty, passion, teamwork, respect and self-belief, despite the circumstances that they were in. They really are amazing.
