Autumn Term Round-Up

Mr Brooks, 8 Jan 2019

Here's a round-up of the autumn term's PE and sport activities at Bidston Avenue.

Autumn Term Round-Up

We had a busy start to the academic year,  taking part in competitions against local primary schools for  sportshall athletics, tag rugby, football, basketball, futsal, and a multi-sport festival, as well as a range of inter-school and curriculum activities.

Mini-Mermaids-

After completing a ten-week programme aimed at helping children to develop healthy minds and healthy bodies, a group of Y4 children completed a 5km run (that's 56 times around the playground).   In partnership with Full of Beans, this programme was aimed at encouraging children who wouldn't normally take part in after-school sports clubs to enjoy keeping active.

Bikeability-

Over twenty Y5 children completed Bikeability training, gaining practical skills and an understanding of how to cycle safely on local roads.  The children learnt how to make sure their bike is safe to ride, as well as how to deal with traffic on short journeys.  You may even have seen them out cycling on the roads around school!

Santa Dash 2018-

During the last week of the autumn term, children from FS2 to Y6 took part in our very first Santa dash. We added a festive twist to our daily mile activities, by encouraging the children to wear a Santa (or other festive) hat, and also sent home sponsor forms so that the children could help raise funds for a local charity. The children showed great determination to complete as many laps as possible. In total, after almost 10,500 laps of the playground, the children had covered 1,497 km. That's enough to travel from our school, all the way to Vienna!

Leadership update-

Y6 children have been developing their leadership skills, meaning they can organise and run activities at lunchtimes across our different playgrounds.  These activities have ranged from a mini world cup, throwing and catching games, and penalty shoot-outs, to helping other children prepare for competitions and tournaments.   Next term, a team of Y5 leaders will be trained to help keep more children keep active at playtime.

The term in numbers-

  • 22 after-school clubs on offer
  • 220+ children involved in after-school sports clubs each week
  • 500,000 active minutes- that's how much time children from Y1-6 have been involved in PE/sport activities (ranging from the daily mile and PE lessons, to competitions)
