Tameside Hockey Heats & Final

Mr Ellis, 18 Dec 2019

We took 3 teams to the Heats and 2 teams progressed. In the finals we managed a 4th place finish!

On a chilly November Friday we took 3 teams of keen children to the hockey heats where we were hoping to qualify for the Tameside Finals that took place the week after.

Two teams were in the main competition while the other team got to take part in some fun hockey drills and then some matches against other schools where they showed good skill. They all had fun and some of the year 5’s will be even more ready for competition next year.

Our A team played very well in their first game against Lyndhurst and were very unlucky to concede a goal against the run of play to lose 1-0. They won their second match thanks to a great hat trick from JN and won one and drew one of the next two, meaning we qualified for the

finals as the best second place team.

Our B team did even better winning their first 3 matches with convincing performances and great defence from AL and AE. They drew their last game against Our Lady’s which meant they got through to the final as group winners.

The final tournament was the Wednesday after and was even colder than the week before. Our B team got off to a great start in their first match, leading two nil with super goals and play from JL and AW before the opposition came back to draw 2-2. In our second game they battled really hard but were outclassed by a very good Pinfold team, meaning they finished second in their group!

Our A team played very well from the start and beat Our Lady’s

convincingly with super play from OG and BR in particular. They then played very well in their last group game, getting the draw that they needed to win the group and qualify for the semi finals.

In the semi finals we came up against a very good Godley team, we played well and had good chances but eventually lost 3-0.

In the 3rd/4th place play off we had a fantastic performance against Dowson, who only just lost their semi final to Pinfold. In the end we lost 1-0 but were probably the better team.

This meant we finished in 4th place out of over 50 schools who entered, our best ever hockey performance.

Player of the match was JN for the Heat and AE for the Finals.
