Plymouth Primary Cross Country Championships

The Level 2 cross country event - Pathway to the Level 3 Devon Winter Games.

What a day we had at the Staddiscombe Primary Cross Country Championships today. The sun was shining and our Wembury runners were well and truly up for the challenge.

16 schools were in the 'minor' schools catagory, this is decided on numbers on role in KS2 of each school and Wembury is classed as a smaller school, this evens up the playing field in bigger events enabling small schools to compete against smaller schools and the same for the larger schools.

The year 4 girls team took to the course in the first race of the day and they made light work of the course with all 6 of the girls finishing in the top 26; including a fantastic 5th place for Phoebe! Next it was the year 4 boys turn, spurred on by the success of the girls they also raced home in fantastic places with Oscar claiming 6th place, Charlie 8th and the rest not far behind them.

It was then the turn of the year 6's. A few of our year 6's have been attending this event for 4 years now so it is one of the first 'lasts' for them at Wembury. They really did themselves proud, our girls top spot went to Ella claiming 3rd place and earning herself an individual medal today - well done Ella!  Then it was the boys. You could see the hunger on their faces as they lined up for their race and they gave it their all on the 1.1 mile long course. We couldn't believe it when we saw our rainbow coloured bibs coming around the corner all in such amazing positions. 1st place for Henry, 2nd for Azad, 4th for Zac and 13th for Rowan and Josh and Ryan in close succession. What a fantastic effort by all involved!

Of course the wonderful thing about cross country is that although you run on your own and can be awarded an individual medal, it is the whole team score that counts. The places are added together and the lowest scoring team wins overall. As if all of this excitement wasn't enough the team scores were in. The year 4 girls finished in 2nd place overall with the silver medals, our year 4 boys finished in 1st place over all bringing home the gold, 5th place for the year 6 girls and a smashing 1st place team effort with a total of 20 points for our year 6 boys! Well done Wembury - you were all awsome!

Thanks go to PSSP for the organising of what is always a fantastic event and even booking in the sunshine, and for all the sports leaders who were put through their paces today. We love cross country!!

After such a fantastic day, we are very pleased to confirm that our year 4 girls and boys and our year 6 boys have all successfully qualified for the Level 3 Devon Winter Games in March 2019. Bring it on!
