The prestigious award recognises the work that has taken place this year to deliver a green legacy for school sport in England from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Supported by Sport England National Lottery, Planet Earth Games Trust and Youth Sport Trust collaborated on a three-pronged programme across the School Games network which reaches 2.5m young people every year. Activities including:

  • creating a new green value to embody the School Games
  • trained 43 Active Partnership areas and 450 School Games organisers on sustainable delivery, including tailored area plans
  • developed a training module to empower Young Leaders to deliver sustainable sport.

Chris Broadbent, Founder and CEO, Planet Earth Games Trust said: “Climate action requires collaboration and that is exactly what has enabled us to deliver this programme successfully. There was a real team effort between Planet Earth Games Trust, Youth Sport Trust, Sport England and Birmingham 2022 in bringing this programme to life. But also the dozens of sports operators and bodies at grass roots and elite international level, whose best practice fed into the training and module. This award is a testament of the power of collaboration.

“We know from our own surveys with Schools Games participants and young people nationally and internationally that they are highly motivated by climate change. So, addressing that in school sport is a must, first and foremost because it’s the right thing to do, but also so that school sport reflects the motivations and passions of young people. And by providing the type of sustainable experiences that motivate young people, we can also engage a larger cohort of them into school sport and regular physical activity."
