SGO Funding Update

Posted 15th December 2021

We are pleased to confirm that SGO funding has been extended until 31 August 2022.

The following update from Sport England has been shared with School Games Organisers and School Games Organiser host schools today (Wednesday 15 December 2021):

Dear School Games Organisers and SGO Hosts,

We are writing to you as the year draws to an end to do two things. To thank you for your work across 2021 and to update you on funding.

First on funding. We are delighted to let you know that we have received confirmation from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport that funding has been extend until the end of the current academic year. So up to 31 August 2022. Funding agreements will be formally extended in the new year.

The Government is considering arrangements for the Primary PE and Sport Premium and School Games Organiser network for the 2022-23 academic year and beyond and will confirm the position as early as possible in the New Year. We are doing all we can to advocate for the network and to secure clarity on longer-term funding. There has been no suggestion from Government they will deviate from their commitment to refresh the School Sport and Physical Activity Action Plan and place the School Games within this.

The operating environment over the last 12 months has continued to be highly challenging. You have worked tirelessly with your schools and local partners to help keep as many youngsters as possible active. The fact that the latest active lives children’s results, published on the 9 December, show there has been no overall change to activity levels compared to the previous academic year, is testament to efforts of you and the wider network. The survey also shows that enjoyment and confidence in taking part in sport and physical activity is down and that inequalities have widened, particularly for the less affluent and black boys. For us this underlines the importance of the role School Games Organisers play.

On behalf of everyone at the Youth Sport Trust and Sport England we want to thank you for your work and dedication. It is recognised and we very much appreciate it. We wish you a very happy Christmas and look forward to continuing to work with you in the New Year.
