Approaches to Competition: Resource
In 2018/19 10 School Games Organisers, NGBs and one Lead Applicant utilised the findings from Youth Sport Trust research and undertook an action research pilot through Sport England National Lottery investment through the School Games.
Following the pilot an interactive resource has been developed. This resource considers alternative ways to deliver competition to engage more young people based on the eight themes indicated from research. The resource aims to support practitioners working with young people through animations, case studies and top tips.

Utilising the desktop research findings, and in light of The School Games review in 2016, the Youth Sport Trust, funded by the Sport England National Lottery, launched a pilot project to evaluate the feasibility of conducting alternative competition formats through the School Games Organiser network with the overarching aim of increasing young people’s participation in sport and physical activity.
PR Campaign: #ReframeCompetition
To continue to build on the SG Mission and Vision, the campaign looks to tackle some of the negative experiences that exist within competition when there is an over-emphasis on a single outcome – most goals, fastest time or furthest distance. We know that these issues are prominent in school sport competitions and in some cases, having negative effects on young people taking part in school sport.
Through feedback from the network, you emphasised the need for further support in spreading the message about the importance in identifying a variety of young people and creating a positive environment to parents, teachers and the wider public in order for your events to have the biggest impact – this campaign is part of that support.
The campaign has now launched and we ask for your support in promoting the campaign to your networks and further afield to ensure we can reach new audiences, and ensure competition is meaningful for all young people.
