Keysteps Gymnastics Competition

On the 6th March 2018 two teams from Ab Kettleby (Year 3/4 and Year 5/6) took part in the School Games Gymnastics Competition.

The Year 3&4 went first, they did the Body Management, and Kiya went first after that it was Alice then Milo at the end it was Camaron. The moves were 5 single bounce skips after that it was dish with one leg out, then they did towards half lever. After that, it was towards Japana with their back held horizontally. Then they did an arch which is similar to a dish except on your front. Once they had completed that they did a front support press up and then either right splits, box splits or left splits. And finally shoulder flexibility into a broad jump.

Once they had completed that routine, they did the floor routine starting with a forward roll and then three travelling steps after that they did an arabesque a half turn into a backward roll onto knees. The next step was a front support then press up from there they did a turn through side support. Next they did a shoulder stand to roll then a pivot and cartwheel.

After that routine, they did the vault. They had two choices: springboard on to the vault then tuck jump off it, or no springboard squat on then stretch jump off and that was all of their routine done. They all did really well!

Once all the Year 3/4 had performed it was the Year 5/6 turn. First up was Lucy, then Sophie after her it was Ellie then Nina. We started off with steps three – Body Management. The first step was ten single skips (with a skipping rope). After that, we did a dish then roll to an arch and back to a dish. Then we did a toward half lever then a Japana. Next, we pushed up into a front support then turned to a press up. The 7th move was the splits then a bridge then roll to stand. Finally, we did a broad jump.

The next routine was the floor exercise we could do these in any order, we could only choose 6 to perform out of ten. The choices were: a round off, side scale towards y balance, backward roll to straddle stand, full or half turn, to cartwheel consecutively or handstand forward roll. Then you had a choice of a bridge, splits, or half lever.

Then it was the vault. We had a choice of jumping up without a springboard and a stretch jump off. Or we could tuck through with a springboard. We had the highest vault and we didn’t use the springboard. It seemed difficult at first then at the competition it seemed easy. We all managed to do it in the end.

We both came 2nd and the Year 1/2 (who did theirs separately) came 1st they are now going to represent Melton & Belvoir in the School Games Super Series Final (level 3) at Oakham on Wednesday 14th March.

We have all really enjoyed the gymnastics competition because it is something we all love to do. I hope we do more competitions like this in the future.
