Sports Hall Athletics - A Really Fun Morning of Indoor Sport !

Chris Graham, 7 Feb 2020

Every year (whilst organising Honeywell's Fixtures Calendar) we consider each event on its merits in terms of: - competitive level (we like a mix from high to low, so that everyone can play),  - opportunity to participate in a variety of sports,  - number of children who can be involved (there's a lot to be said for a smaller group at times, and those fixtures that cater for larger numbers of players) .... and if I'm honest, how much Honeywell's sportspeople and I enjoy the fixture year on year.

Sports Hall Athletics - A Really Fun Morning of Indoor Sport !

Sports Hall Athletics firmly delivers against those last two criteria - providing 24 athletes in Yr 5&6 a 2.5 hour experience which is somewhere between 'It's a Knockout'  (those parents who grew up in the UK in the 70's & 80's, will understand this) and an expertly managed track & field event that they absolutely love!

Thanks to our ever-appreciated parents who stepped up to provide transport so that our team arrived safely at Battersea Sports Centre, our athletes arrived and took their seats on the bleachers.  The Obstacle Race was already set out, and the music was on, with 7 schools participating in the event, nearly 200 athletes were primed and ready to start.  Each athlete participates in 3 events, and your children held on tightly and responsibly to their post it notes with their named events, so that they knew which event they had to listen out for.  This shows real leadership and personal ownership, because year on year, our athletes are asking less questions around "when's my race, where am I supposed to be"?

On the field, our athletes participated in Chest Push, Triple Jump, Long Jump, Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce, Javelin (Luke entered the Teacher's event and placed a respectable 3rd).

Whilst all of our athletes gave their absolute best, Determination Awards were handed to: Jake in 5JW and Zoe T in 6DG for their focus on the track and field, and also their support of their team mates, which embodied the spirit of the school games.

Whilst Honeywell prides itself on offering numerous fixtures across a number of sports, Sacred Heart (who were in our heat yesterday), train their team hard for this & participate in a handful of other fixtures in their calendar.  Their Head of PE Ms Ormond used to run this event, and their hard work paid off, awarding them 1st place.

Honeywell however took 2nd, 3rd & 4th place in a number of track events: 1+1 relay, 2+2 relay, 4+4 relay, obstacle and over & under races (in boy & girl categories). Fourth place overall, (Sellincourt narrowly took 3rd, and Our Lady Queen of Heaven 2nd).
