Yr 3 & 4 Netball at Telferscot

Jem Godfrey & Becs Horgan, 6 Mar 2020

On Monday afternoon we took a team of year 4’s and a team of year 3’s to Teleferscott Primary school for a friendly match. It was an unusual setting as the match was played in a cage where the sidelines were the cage itself and the posts were actually basketball hoops. However, this didn't phase our netballers at all and they were all looking forward to a fun match.

Year 3's (5-2)

Our year 3 team were excited on the journey to this match and didn’t lose their spirit even when they were 2-0 down in the first half. The nerves of playing away in a new environment means that they took a little while to settle into using their netball skills they are starting to demonstrate at training with our parent Coaches Jem, Becs & Shweta. The team defended well in our opponent's goal circle (Malyun, Lila and Josh working well together) but struggled to move the ball down court towards our goal. After making some changes, based on what was seen on court, Honeywell fought back in the second half with some great linking up through centre court between Finn, Catherine and Francesca and shooting from Margault and Sasha. We went on to win 5-2. Well done team!

Year 4's (7-1)

There was a slight hesitance at the start when our players took to the court, some of our players looked concerned when the whistle blew for an infringement (all part of the game and an important part of why we start fixtures at this age group).  There was an over reliance on some players to move the ball towards the goal (we need to work in training on reminding our youngsters how to use everybody on court!)  with some players were marking the ball rather than their players.

However, it didn’t take them long to find their flow and by the second half we were seeing the team switch from attack into defence smoothly and put together some good quick passes driving towards the goal.  Freya and Renee really took note of where their partners were in that second half, continually putting pressure on them when they had the ball.  Melis, Nate and Fillipa worked fabulously to do some quick passing and what was great to see was Honeywell's Netballers catching the ball whilst moving without footwork – something we are practicing at our squad training.   Mishka and Olivia supported all of this and throughout the game improving on snatching the ball and switching between attack and defence.

A final (well deserved) result of a resounding 7-1 win and it was great to see what we are learning in our sessions put into practice.

Huge thank you to our 4 parent Coaches who volunteered this year to take the Squad for training, and umpired and coached at the fixture, and our parent drivers allowing our children this opportunity to play & learn!
