Yr 4 Girls’ Hockey With Hornsby House

Chris Graham, 28 Feb 2020

All of Honeywell's Year 4 girls who wanted to participate played in a friendly hockey match yesterday at Kennington Park with Hornsby House.  This was an opportunity for our pupils to consolidate their learning from PE lessons in a match situation and we fielded 4 teams, mixing Honeywell players with Hornsby players (girls played for either Honey-House or Hornsby-Well).

Yr 4 Girls’ Hockey With Hornsby House

After a wet start in the morning, we were all delighted to see the sun drying out the astro as we arrived to warm up.  We split into 8 teams, and played 7-8 a side matches on each pitch in parallel.  An opportunity to play on a full sized pitch (which was an eye-opener for some - a hockey pitch really *is* that big)!

Luke and I, along with 4 Hornsby House Sports Coaches divided our attention across the games, encouraging the girls to move into space and explaining additional rules designed to give every girl plenty of 'touches' on the ball.  It was wonderful to see the support for each other, the competitive drive and the passing and shooting (a number of goals were scored by our girls) with 4 games running consecutively, I couldn't keep track of each scoreline, however as I reminded the children, it's not always about the score, sometimes the focus is on thinking about how you can improve your skills, and it's fair to say, with a little encouragement and suggestion, all of the matches showed moments of strong passing, moving into space and defending opponents, with improvement over the hour played.

Ending the games with three cheers, and nominating player of the match for each team, we picked up our bags, and sticks and gratefully accepted the match 'tea' of juice and a wagon wheel (they're not quite as tasty as I remember from my childhood, but there were no complaints from our players)!

Thanks to the parents who gave up their time to escort and transport the year group (we simply couldn't make these fixtures happen without your help).

Impeccable behaviour on the journey to and from Honeywell (especially on the tube) and very pleased with our Honeywell Ambassadors who certainly showed their skills off to the best of their ability on pitch!

Well done - photos attached (you may have to play 'spot your daughter')!
