Year 2 Boys Football Festival

On Tuesday 3rd December 2019, eight children from Year 2 (see photo) represented the school in a fun football festival in the grounds of Chessington School. The team were excited and full of enthusiasm as they took on five primary schools from the local area on a crisp winter’s afternoon.

Upon arriving, the team performed a range of passing and shooting drills in preparation for the festival. After an opening presentation from the event organiser, it was time for the football to start. O.L.I. got off to a brilliant start in their opening encounter against Lovelace. Showing great attacking flair and accurate shooting in front of goal, the boys raced to an early lead. The boys didn’t look back and continued their superb play to win the first match 5-1. Next up was Knollmead school. In this match, like all others, O.L.I. showed great teamwork particularly how they unselfishly passed to each other to create goal scoring opportunities. O.L.I. secured a superb 6-1 win. The boys dominated possession in the third match against Castle Hill. Showing excellent organisation and accurate shooting, O.L.I. reigned victorious with an 8-0 triumph.

In the penultimate match versus Burlington, the boys dribbled and passed with attacking intent. This resulted in a well-deserved 5-0 victory. Finally, O.L.I. played a strong Christ Church Surbiton. Despite conceding early goals, the boys’ spirit never wavered as they continued to attack and show great effort. In a ten-goal thriller, O.L.I. were unfortunate to be on the losing side of 6-4 score line. The children certainly enjoyed participating in this sporting experience. This can be seen in what they reported about this event:

· Zachary: ‘I did some really cool skills.’

· Bradley: ‘WE WON!’

· Joshua: ‘I am proud that I scored a hat trick.’

· Charlie: ‘I am happy because I scored a top-right corner goal.’

· Patrick: ‘I liked it when I did a nutmeg.’

· Dylan: ‘I enjoyed shooting.’

· Matthew: ‘I scored my first goal.’

· Reggie: ‘We won 4 matches!’

I was thoroughly impressed with how the boys acted during the afternoon, both on and off the pitch. They listened to instructions; were supportive of each other and showed respect to opponents. The children should all be very proud of their performances; they displayed superb levels of effort, enthusiasm and skill as they went on to win four matches out of a possible five. I would like to thank the parents and carers who provided transport and supported the team during the festival.
