Year 5/6 Boys’ 2nd Round District Football Cup

On Wednesday 22nd January 2020, ten boys (see photo) from across Years 5 and 6 competed against Lovelace school in the second round of the District Cup. The match was originally scheduled for before Christmas, however due to Lovelace having a waterlogged pitch, O.L.I. hosted the match and the boys were very excited to get underway.

O.L.I. started the match well, as they enjoyed the majority of possession. After several shots on target and consecutive corners, the home team made this pressure count with two well-worked goals. It looked like O.L.I. would take this two-goal lead into half time; however, Lovelace scored two late goals of their own-both via set pieces. The boys didn’t drop their heads though and in the closing moments of the first half scored a deflected long-range effort to take 3-2 lead into the break.

After a brief team talk, O.L.I. were eager to extend their lead. They certainly didn’t disappoint with a flurry of second-half goals. It was really pleasing to see how comfortable the boys were in possession and the attacking intent they showed when completing accurate forward passes. In addition, the boys were resolute in defence with several impressive blocks, clearances and saves from our defenders and goalkeeper. It really was a brilliant team effort in the second half which resulted in an overall superb 7-2 home win.

I would like to congratulate Sajeel, Raphael, Archie, Sam, Ben, Patrick, Ygor, Jonathan, Billy and Oliver for their excellent performances. They worked wonderfully as a team and played some great football. We now look forward to the quarter-finals, where Surbiton Prep awaits prior to half-term. Many thanks to the parents, carers and children who supported the team- it was a great home atmosphere.
