Year 6 Girls Cup Match

On Monday 9th December 2019, ten girls took part in the second round of the district cup competition against King’s Oak primary school. Following travelling to the New Malden school by public transport, the girls had plenty of time to complete passing and shooting drills as well as an opportunity to discuss tactics.

As soon as the match started, it was one-way traffic with O.L.I. dominating possession and having several shots on goal. The girls had numerous opportunities courtesy of attacking throw-ins and corners; however, they were not able to convert this into a goal.  The closest O.L.I. got in the first half was a well struck shot which hit the post and was hurriedly cleared away.

The same pattern continued in the second half with O.L.I. on the front foot. While the girls started to pass and travel towards goal with more accuracy, they were unable to trouble the goalkeeper on a consistent basis as several shots went high and wide of the target. During the midway point of the second half and completely against the run of play, King’s Oak scored two counter-attack goals to lead the match 2-0. With 10 minutes left, O.L.I. piled on the pressure and made this count with a goal of their own. In the final stages, O.L.I. had a number of attacking moments but unfortunately ran out of time.

Despite being extremely unlucky to be on the losing side of the result, the girls played brilliantly. They showed a superb attitude from the first until the last minute. On another day they would have scored several goals and won the match convincingly. However, the girls should be proud of their efforts. I would like to congratulate Tashny, Carmela, Yasmin, Maia, Grace H, Cassie, Aleeza, Zofia, Karolina and Amirah. I was proud of the girls’ perseverance and teamwork- they were a pleasure to lead.

I would like to thank Mr Jackson for his support in travelling with myself and the team to Kings Oak. This was very much appreciated and vital in making this trip possible. Finally, watch this space to find out how the Year 5/6 boys get on in their cup fixture against Lovelace on Wednesday 18th December.
