Year 6 Girls' Football Finals

On Tuesday 10th December 2019, eight pupils (see photograph) represented our school in the prestigious Kingston Girls’ Football Finals. The team qualified for this event back in October and it is amazingly the fourth year running that O.L.I have qualified for the Year 5/6 Girls’ Finals. The team came up against seven local primary schools which included: St Paul’s KH, Christ Church New Malden, Latchmere, Tolworth, Corpus Christi, Lovelace and St Agatha’s.

The girls started the event wonderfully drawing the first match 1-1 against a strong Latchmere side. Following this, O.L.I. secured two impressive wins courtesy of a one goal advantage against St Agatha’s and CCNM. The fourth match with Corpus Christi was a tense affair- both teams took the lead throughout the match. Unfortunately, the New Malden school sored a winner in final moments to win the encounter 3-2.

All the games that O.L.I participated in were closely contested and decided by a maximum of only one or two goals. This reflected the high standard of play that all qualified teams displayed. The highlight of the event came in the fifth match with a controlled and convincing 2-0 victory over St Paul’s. In the remaining two matches, O.L.I. faced strong opposition in the form of Lovelace and Tolworth. While the girls lost 2-0 to Lovelace in the penultimate match, they didn’t let this deter them from a battling performance against Tolworth in the final game which ended 1-1.

The team finished with an excellent overall record of three wins, two draws and two defeats. The team did brilliantly to finish with a superb 23 points out of a possible 35. This resulted in a joint third place finish; however, due to an inferior goal difference, the girls just missed out on receiving bronze medals. Despite this disappointment, the result is a great accomplishment for the team considering this event was hosting the very best football teams from the Kingston Borough.

I would like to extend my thanks to the parents and carers who kindly provided transport to the venue and for the great support during the event. Finally, many congratulations to Yasmin, Maia, Cassie, Aleeza, Zofia, Grace, Amirah and Karolina for their excellent performances in this event.
