Year 6 Indoor Cricket Event

On Wednesday 11th December 2019, eight children from Year 6 participated in the Kingston Invitational Indoor Cricket Championships. The top five teams from the Summer Year 5 kwik-cricket championships participated alongside O.L.I. who also attended due to winning the inaugural title 2018 title. Following in-school trials and an after-school training session, the eight O.L.I. team members were all excited to participate and showcase their improving skills in this fun edition of cricket.

O.L.I. first faced St Mary’s and despite losing the toss, fielded which was the preferred option. O.L.I made an instant impact in the field with a brilliant runout showing great effort in the field. Additionally, two fielding catches were crucial in limiting the Chessington school to 62 runs in the eight-over innings. After positives in the bowling and fielding departments, it was the time for batting. Following a slow start in the first couple of overs, O.L.I. recovered to hit several boundaries and score runs more freely. At the half-way point, O.L.I. were ahead of the required run rate. However, after losing a number of wickets in the 5th and 6th overs, runs became harder to come by. Despite a valiant display, the team came 17 runs short and lost the opener.

After an interval, which O.L.I. used to refuel by eating their lunches, a strong Latchmere team awaited the children in their final group match. By winning the toss, O.L.I. decided to have a bowl. Again O.L.I. made a very strong start in the first over by taking a wicket and limiting their opponents to dot balls and singles. However, Latchmere then unleashed their attacking intent by scoring a number of boundaries. Despite this, O.L.I. continued to play with passion and did tremendously to bowl their opponents out with one ball to spare. In their batting innings, O.L.I were made to chase an ominous 92 runs reached by the Kingston school. However, the eight children gave it a brilliant go. It was brilliant to see the improvement in the team’s batting. They shared the strike brilliantly by hitting the side wall and running in between the wicket. This improved playing style secured a far better batting total, as O.L.I. scored 67 runs. While this was not enough to guarantee victory, the team should be very  proud of their improved performances.

I would like to congratulate Zofia, Ben, Erin, Yasmin, Aamir, Luke, Andrew and Joshua for their excellent and improving performances. I hope that this experience will be a catalyst for enjoying cricket this summer with Year 6 kwik-cricket events and an after-school club to enjoy. Finally, I would like to thank Mr Dolan for generously giving his time to support the team in travelling to, at and from the venue. This was very much appreciated.
